Heat Director Michael Mann Wounded in Range Accident
Acclaimed director Michael Mann has been hospitalised after shooting himself accidentally at a gun range in Los Angeles. His condition is reported to be stable.
Mann was at a Los Angeles gun range when a firearm went off by mistake, striking his leg. He was admitted to hospital following the incident.
The Los Angeles Police Department made the news public. Variety reported that Mann, who has been an experienced target shooter for decades, is in stable condition, and the injury has been described as minor.
Representatives for the filmmaker released a statement saying that a holstered weapon discharged accidentally during a visit to a gun range on Saturday. The director sustained minor injuries, received treatment and was discharged.
The firearm discharged while Mann was attempting to put it into a holster during target practice. The event took place at about 4:00 p.m. at the Los Angeles range. Police confirmed that he was in stable condition when officers were called to the scene.
Mann's filmography includes Heat, Thief, Manhunter, Collateral and The Insider. He most recently directed Ferrari, a sports biopic starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penelope Cruz as his wife, Laura.
The 83-year-old filmmaker is currently working on Heat 2, the long-anticipated sequel to the 1995 crime drama starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The original was a commercial hit that followed a detective and a professional thief locked in a high-stakes battle of wits.
Heat 2 is based on the 2022 novel of the same name, and Mann co-wrote the screenplay with Meg Gardiner. The film is described as a sequel and prequel that delves into the early lives of its central characters.
