Guru Dutt’s Timeless Classics Celebrated as Jackie Shroff Honors Legend

Bollywood star Jackie Shroff used his social channels to honor the 101st birth anniversary of Guru Dutt, one of Indian cinema's most visionary directors and actors. He shared a carefully curated collage of black‑and‑white photographs that capture Dutt’s creative journey, adding a brief message of remembrance and a respectful emoji.

Born on 9 July 1925 as Vasant Kumar Shivshankar Padukone, Dutt’s directorial debut came with the 1951 film "Baji". He quickly rose to prominence, delivering a string of enduring classics: "Aar‑Paar", "Mr. & Mrs. '55", "CID", "Pyaasa", "Kagaz Ke Phool", "Chaudhvin Ka Chand" and "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam".

While "Pyaasa" and "Kagaz Ke Phool" did not achieve immediate box‑office success, they were later celebrated as masterpieces that reshaped narrative and visual storytelling in Hindi cinema. Their soundtracks, featuring iconic numbers such as "Jaane Wo Kaise Log The" and "Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye", continue to be celebrated.

The scores were crafted by eminent composers S.D. Burman, O.P. Nayyar and Ravi, and voiced by legendary singers Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt and Hemant Kumar. On the personal front, Dutt married playback singer Geeta Dutt in 1953, and the couple had three children. Their marriage eventually encountered difficulties, and Dutt’s close collaboration with actress Waheeda Rehman remained a focal point of public interest.

Guru Dutt’s untimely death on 10 October 1964, at just 39 years old, was linked to a combination of alcohol and sleeping pills. Jackie Shroff’s tribute reaffirmed Dutt’s enduring legacy and his unparalleled contribution to the golden era of Indian film.
