Awards and Contributions of Gangubai Hangal, India’s Classical Music Legend

The Indian government and cultural institutions recognized Gangubai Hangal’s lifelong dedication with several high honors. In 1971, she received the Padma Bhushan for her outstanding service to the arts. Two years later, the Sangeet Natak Akademi awarded her its prestigious award, followed by a fellowship from the same academy in 1996—an accolade granted to only a handful of artists.

In 2002, Hangal was bestowed the Padma Vibhushan, the nation’s second‑highest civilian award. Alongside these honors, she championed organ donation, publicly pledging to donate her eyes and encouraging others to consider the cause. Her legacy continues through recorded archives, scholarships established in her name, and the countless students she inspired.
