From Ring Triumphs to Personal Turmoil: Mary Kom’s Candid Talk
Mumbai – On Bigg Boss 20, veteran boxer Mary Kom disclosed a deeply personal struggle that contrasted sharply with her illustrious career. The six‑time world champion recounted a moment when she entertained thoughts of self‑destruction, only to be pulled back by the responsibility she feels towards her children.
During a group discussion with fellow contestants Isha Rikki, Riti Tiwari and Kanika Mann, Kom reflected on the paradox of being celebrated for her strength in the boxing ring while feeling emotionally fragile at home. She spoke of the hardships endured from childhood, the sacrifices she made for her family, her state and her nation, and the unquenched desire to win more medals, even though age now bars her from further competition.
Kom’s résumé features gold medals from the 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018 Women’s World Boxing Championships, making her the only Indian boxer with eight world‑level podium finishes. She also holds five Asian championship titles.
The boxer added that expressing sadness has become a calculated effort. Previously she would cry freely; now she feels the need to "pull the tears inside" to maintain composure.
Her path to the top began after being inspired by Manipur’s Dingko Singh, despite her father's initial disapproval. Secret training sessions and financial constraints did not stop her from becoming a worldwide sporting ambassador for India.
