Satish Kaul’s life was a rollercoaster of cinematic triumphs and unimaginable hardships, marking him as Punjabi cinema’s undisputed king, often compared to Amitabh Bachchan. Hailing from Kashmir, born in 1946 to poet father Mohan Lal Kaul, he pursued acting dreams post-Srinagar schooling at FTII, studying with icons like Jaya Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha.

The 1970s saw his meteoric rise in Punjabi films. Romantic leads in hits like ‘Sassi Punnu,’ ‘Ishk Nimana,’ ‘Patola,’ and ‘Mauja Jatt’ made him a superstar, amassing around 300 films over 40 years. Ventures into Bollywood with ‘Karma,’ ‘Ram Lakhan,’ and others were respectable but didn’t match his regional dominance.

Television catapulted him to pan-Indian fame. As Indradev in ‘Mahabharat,’ he captivated the nation. Memorable stints in ‘Vikram Aur Betal’ and ‘Circus’ with a young Shah Rukh Khan—who later revealed Satish’s work inspired his career—cemented his TV legacy. The 2011 PTC Lifetime Achievement Award celebrated his Punjabi prowess.

But life off-screen was cruel. Divorce estranged him from family. Moving to Ludhiana, his acting academy failed. A broken hip in 2015 led to 2.5 years of immobility, financial collapse, and selling his house. Hospital pleas for help from the industry went unheeded.

Satish’s death on April 10, 2021, at age 74, exposed the dark underbelly of showbiz. His story urges the industry to support its veterans, ensuring legends like him don’t fade into forgotten suffering.
