Film Maker Agnihotri Calls for Respecting Youth Voices Amid Education Agitations

In New Delhi on August 7, director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri gave his perspective on the student-led agitation targeting the nation’s education policies. The comments came while he was present at a screening honoring saint Neem Karoli Baba.

After a brief pause, Agnihotri asserted that such demonstrations are intrinsic to democratic health. “This is how democracy works – it repeats itself. For seventy years we have seen thousands of protests, and they will continue. They ought to happen,” he explained.

The rally stemmed from a clamor for clear, reliable procedures within the education system, especially after a NEET paper leak shook confidence. Protesters also demanded the resignation of the then‑education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

With a career exceeding two decades in Hindi cinema, Agnihotri debuted as a director with “Chocolate” (2005). He later delivered hits such as “Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal,” “Hate Story,” “Buddha in a Traffic Jam,” and “The Tashkent Files.”

His breakthrough arrived with “The Kashmir Files” (2022), a film portraying the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, which earned acclaim and box‑office success, ranking among the year’s top earners. He subsequently directed “The Vaccine War,” spotlighting India’s scientific fight against the Covid‑19 pandemic.

The director is now gearing up to release “The Delhi Files,” the latest entry in his investigative “Files” series. He concluded that in a true democracy, protest is inevitable and the voice of students must not be muted.
