India’s education activist loses 8.5 kg on hunger strike, stars demand government action

Renowned Ladakh engineer and education activist Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike since June 28, reportedly shedding about eight and a half kilograms. The fast, intended to press the government for comprehensive reforms in the school system, has now entered its third week.

Bollywood veteran Fatima Sana Shaikh posted a photo of Wangchuk on Instagram, noting the 19‑day duration of the protest and warning that waiting for a medical emergency before responding is unacceptable. She lauded Wangchuk’s contributions to the nation and urged that no citizen should have to risk their life to make their voice heard.

Actress Shweta Tiwari added her support on social media, insisting that the cause of education and youth welfare is above partisan lines. She criticised the ruling party for allegedly using the activist’s struggle to further its political narrative, stressing that her solidarity is with Wangchuk and the issue, not any political faction.

Both celebrities called upon the authorities to initiate a peaceful negotiation, emphasizing the need to protect Wangchuk’s health while addressing the systemic challenges he highlights.
