Dhrupad and Dhamar Maestro’s Journey to England and France in 1937
In 1937 Pandit Ram Chatur Malik accompanied Maharaja’s younger brother Vishweshwar Singh on a cultural delegation to Europe. The duo performed in prestigious venues across England and France, introducing Western audiences to the intricate structures of Dhrupad and Dhamar.
The tour marked a historic moment: an Indian classical vocalist presenting his art on foreign soil at a time when such exchanges were scarce. Reports from the concerts highlighted Malik’s command over the four Banis of Dhrupad—Gauhar, Dagar, Khandar and Naahar—and his ability to maintain the traditional gravitas while engaging a new audience.
The European performances not only broadened his personal acclaim but also paved the way for future cultural collaborations between India and the West.
