Deven Verma: Comedy Icon Discovered Through Stage Performance

Few actors have left as strong a mark on Hindi comedy as Deven Verma. Celebrated for his humor and impeccable timing, he remained active in films for close to five decades. Notably, his path into cinema was not shaped by a big audition or a film dynasty but by his talent on stage.

Deven was a regular participant in college theatre and youth festivals. His stage work eventually caught the eye of renowned filmmaker B.R. Chopra, who selected him for a role in 'Dharmputra.' For this assignment, Deven was paid 600 rupees per month.

Deven Verma was born on October 23, 1937. Later, his family settled in Pune, where he completed his education. He studied politics and sociology at Narrowji Wadia College. Alongside his studies, he became deeply involved in stage performances, youth festival events, and drama groups. He also enjoyed imitating popular film personalities.

Recalling his early days in a 2013 interview, Deven said he performed on stage often. During a performance at an event organized by the North India Punjabi Association, B.R. Chopra was present. Impressed by Deven's act, Chopra offered him a role in 'Dharmputra.'

Released in 1961, 'Dharmputra' was Deven's film debut. Although it was not a box office success, the experience opened doors for him. He then performed stage shows abroad for a time. Later, he worked with AVM Studios under a contract of about three years, during which he trained in acting.

In 1963, Deven appeared in 'Gumraah' as Ashok Kumar's servant. The comic role was appreciated by audiences. He followed it with appearances in 'Aaj Aur Kal,' 'Anupama,' and 'Kahin Aur Chal.'

Deven's breakthrough took several years, but his persistence paid off. The 1975 film 'Chori Mera Kaam' became a key film in his career, as audiences loved his comedic approach. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian in 1976 for the film. He went on to win the same category award in 1979 for 'Chor Ke Ghar Chor' and in 1983 for 'Angoor,' making him a three-time winner.

He also appeared in 'Golmaal,' 'Khatta Meetha,' 'Buddha Mil Gaya,' 'Rang Biranga,' 'Nastik,' and 'Andaz Apna Apna.' His performance in 'Angoor' is still fondly remembered. Deven was additionally a film producer and director. He ventured into production with 'Yakeen' in 1969 and directed 'Besharam.'

Deven Verma died in Pune on December 2, 2014. Reports suggest that kidney failure was the cause of his death.
