Deven Bhojani Talks Unspoken Understanding with Director on Recent Web Series

Actor Deven Bhojani, who recently earned praise for his portrayal of Kuku Merchant in the web series “Chumbak,” opened up about his unique working relationship with director Aatish Kapadia. While promoting the show, Bhojani highlighted how the director’s presence influences the entire crew.

“Kapadia is more than a director; he’s the force that pulls the whole team together,” Bhojani said. He noted that the director’s enthusiasm is contagious, lifting the morale of everyone on set and encouraging them to give their best performance. Even after a demanding shoot, Bhojani finds himself recalling Kapadia’s sharp focus and vibrant energy.

The actor emphasized a silent synergy between them: “We often don’t need lengthy conversations. A quick glance or a small gesture instantly tells us what’s needed. When Aatish references a prior shoot code such as 44A or 37B, the desired tone or expression comes to me immediately.” This intuitive link, according to Bhojani, makes the filming process smoother and more efficient.

Beyond the professional realm, the duo shares a personal friendship. “We are good friends off‑set, yet we never impose our opinions on each other’s work. If Kapadia feels a role fits me but I’m uneasy, I speak up straightaway,” Bhojani explained, underlining mutual respect.

“Chumbak,” scripted by Kapadia and Jamnadas Mazehia, chronicles the lives of five families in a bustling Mumbai row‑house colony where neighbors constantly intervene in each other's affairs. Central to the narrative are Ranjni (Neena Gupta) and Kuku (Deven Bhojani), whose marriage faces turbulence and becomes fodder for neighborhood gossip, leading to unsolicited advice, misunderstandings and a cascade of comedic events. The series also features Arjun Bijlani, Helee Shah, Sumit Vyas, Manasi Parekh and a host of supporting talent, and can be streamed on Netflix.
