Delhi student housing crisis spotlighted after Satyaniketan building collapse

The collapse of a five‑storey hostel in Delhi’s Satyaniketan area on September 6, which claimed seven lives, has shone a harsh light on the city’s student housing shortage. Actor activist Sonu Sood pointed out that Delhi hosts around seven lakh higher‑education students, yet the available hostel capacity stands at just thirty thousand seats – a ratio of roughly one berth for every thirty‑one seekers. He suggested that the government earmark unused land around university campuses for the construction of safe, inexpensive hostels and grant universities the right to expand residential facilities within their own grounds. According to Sood, such policy tweaks could protect young lives, calm anxious parents, boost institutional earnings, and keep many educational aspirations alive. In the wake of the tragedy, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed an official inquiry and a structural safety audit of other vulnerable buildings nearby.
