From Child Prodigy to Padma Shri: The Life of Sarod Virtuoso Rajiv Taranath

Indian classical music, a living archive of the nation’s cultural soul, has been enriched by countless maestros. Among them, Pandit Rajiv Taranath stands out for a career that spanned nine decades.

Born in Bangalore on October 7, 1932, to music‑loving parents—father Pandit Taranath and mother Sumati Bai—Rajiv’s first encounter with melody was at home. He gave his inaugural public recital at nine, and his teenage years saw regular broadcasts on All India Radio, highlighting his early command over ragas.

The young artist later entered the tutelage of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, becoming one of the foremost exponents of the guru’s sarod school. Additional mentorship from Pandit Ravi Shankar and Vidushi Annapurna Devi broadened his perspective.

Parallel to his artistic pursuits, he earned a Ph.D. in English literature and served as a professor and department head at a regional engineering college in Tiruchirappalli. Choosing music over academia, he relocated to Kolkata for intensive study under Khan.

His performances, noted for deep raga immersion, precise intonation, and the sarod’s nuanced voice, earned invitations worldwide. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 2019, and he collected several other accolades from music academies.

Pandit Rajiv Taranath breathed his last on June 11, 2024, in Mysore, at the age of 91. His birth anniversary on October 17 remains a day of tribute, reminding the world of his indelible imprint on Hindustani classical music.
