Chhattisgarh’s Teejan Bai, decorated with three Padma awards, dies in Raipur

Teejan Bai, the celebrated Pandavani exponent from Chhattisgarh, expired at a premier medical facility in Raipur at the age of seventy. Her death was confirmed late Saturday night, sending shockwaves through the state’s artistic community.

Born in the Bilaspur region, she began performing on stage as a child, quickly gaining recognition for her powerful narration of Mahabharata episodes. Over the decades she earned the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and the highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan, a testament to her unparalleled contribution to Indian folk culture.

Following the announcement of her demise, officials arranged for her body to be transported to Durg, where a massive crowd gathered outside her home. People of all ages lined the streets, some clutching old photographs or recordings of her performances, while others simply stood in silent reverence.

The Mayor of Bhilai‑Charoda addressed the media, praising her ability to carry the essence of rural storytelling to global audiences, having performed in 26 countries. He called her an inspiration whose vocal strength and artistic integrity will forever motivate aspiring singers.

In the coming days, the state government plans a state‑level tribute and will explore ways to archive her vast repertoire for future generations.
