Chandrashekhar Vaidya’s Memorable Role as Arya Sumant in Ramayan

Chandrashekhar Vaidya, born on 7 July 1922 in the former Hyderabad State (now Telangana), grew up during the Nizam’s era in a modest family. Leaving college in the early 1940s, he migrated to Bombay, where singer Shamsad Begum’s referral helped him secure a job at Pune’s Shalimar Studios.

His cinematic debut arrived in 1950 with "Bebas," where he performed as a junior artist. Over the following decade, Vaidya built a substantial portfolio, appearing in more than 110 films. Notable titles include "Surang" (1953), "Kali Topi Lal Rumal," "Baradari," "Basanta Bahar," "Gateway of India," "Fashion," "Barasat Ki Raat," "Angulimala," "Rustom-e-Bagdad," and "Jahan Ara."

The mid‑1960s marked his expansion into production and direction with "Cha Cha Cha" (1964) and later "Street Singer," both of which he also starred in. As the industry shifted, Vaidya transitioned to character artist roles by the late 1960s, adding depth to numerous projects.

At age 64, he achieved iconic status by portraying Arya Sumant in Ramanand Sagar’s epic television series "Ramayan." The role earned him widespread acclaim and has remained a beloved memory for viewers across generations.

Beyond acting, Vaidya served as the president of the Cine Artists Association from 1985 to 1996, working tirelessly for the welfare of film‑industry workers. He retired after his appearance in the 2000 horror film "Khauf."

Personal milestones include marrying at 13, completing education only till the seventh standard, and leading a simple life. His son Ashok Shekhar continues the family’s media involvement as a television producer.
