Centenarian Maestro Abdul Rashid Khan Passes Away at 107

Mumbai, August 18 – The classical music world mourned the loss of Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, who died in Kolkata on February 18, 2016, at the remarkable age of 107. Born on August 19, 1908, in the modest town of Salona, the maestro’s life was a tapestry woven with dedication, discipline, and an unyielding love for music.

From his earliest lessons with his father to advanced tutelage under Chand Khan, Barkhudar Khan and Mehtab Khan, he cultivated a voice that embodied the Gwalior gharana while forging a personal style. His repertoire spanned khayal, dhrupad, dhamar and thumri, and he penned verses that found a home in national archives.

In addition to his stage presence, the Ustad contributed significantly to music education. His long tenure at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata saw him guide thousands of students, many of whom have become respected artists in their own right.

His extensive accolades include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the ITC SRA honor, the Bengal Ratna and the Padma Bhushan, conferred in 2012, making him one of the oldest civilian awardees. Even in his final years, he continued to teach and perform, underscoring a lifelong commitment to the art form.

Abdul Rashid Khan’s passing marks the conclusion of a century‑long journey that enriched Indian classical music and inspired generations to come.
