From 'Bharat Kumar' to non‑smoker: the turning point in Manoj Kumar's career

Manoj Kumar, forever linked with the moniker "Bharat Kumar" for his string of nationalistic films, abandoned his cigarette addiction after a single, heartfelt admonition. Born Harikrishnan Giri Goswami on 24 July 1937 in Abbottabad, his family resettled in India following the 1947 partition. An avid admirer of Dilip Kumar, he changed his screen name after watching the film "Shabnam". His early career began with a minor role in "Fashion" (1957), but the defining breakthrough arrived with the role of Bhagat Singh in "Shaheed" (1965). Subsequent successes—"Hariali Aur Rasta", "Gumnaam", "Neel Kamal", "Patthar Ke Sanam"—strengthened his patriotic image. In a restaurant visit with his family, a girl boldly addressed him: "You are Bharat, yet you smoke. Isn’t that disgraceful?" The comment resonated, prompting him to quit cigarettes permanently. He later produced and directed "Uphaar" (1967), echoing Prime Minister Shastri's slogan. Further milestones included "Roti Kapda Aur Makaan" (1974) and "Krantij" (1981). Honors such as the Padma Shri (1992) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015) marked his contributions. He passed away on 4 April 2025, aged 87, remembered both for his cinematic patriotism and his personal resolve.
