Awards, TV Epics and Timeless Songs – Remembering Ravindra Jain
Ravindra Jain’s name is synonymous with some of the most beloved songs in Hindi cinema. Born blind on 28 February 1944 in Aligarh, he cultivated his gift through temple recitals and formal classical training. After a stint teaching music and working with Kolkata radio, he arrived in Mumbai during the early 1970s.
His film debut as a playback singer came with *Kaanch Aur Heera* (1970), but the breakthrough was the 1973 Rajshri Production drama *Saudagar*. Jain not only composed the music but also authored every lyric, producing hit tracks such as “Tera Mera Saath Rahe” and “Husn Hai Ya Koi Kayamat”. The success secured him a lasting association with Rajshri, leading to scores for *Chor Machaye Shor*, *Geet Gata Chal*, *Chit Chor*, *Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se*, *Nadiya Ke Paar*, *Vivah*, and *Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi*.
His most acclaimed work, the soundtrack for *Ram Teri Ganga Maili* (1986), won him the Filmfare Best Music Director award. Jain also shaped Indian television music, most famously composing for Ramanand Sagar’s *Ramayan*, followed by spiritual serials such as *Shri Krishna* and *Jai Hanuman*. His repertoire extended to devotional and private music albums, reinforcing his reputation for crafting simple yet deeply moving melodies.
The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2015. Later that year, on 9 October, he died in Mumbai, leaving behind a treasure trove of songs that continue to inspire listeners across ages. His journey from a visually impaired child in Aligarh to a celebrated composer illustrates the power of perseverance and artistic integrity.
Ravindra Jain’s music remains a beacon for aspiring musicians, proving that talent and dedication can illuminate even the darkest paths.
