Avinash Wadhavan's Lost Stardom: Missed Films and Lost Momentum
There was a time when Avinash Wadhavan looked poised to become one of Bollywood's biggest names. In the early 1990s, as romance and action films were redefining the industry, he was regarded as a rising star with a packed schedule. Today, his name is more often linked to missed opportunities than to box office triumphs.
His early hits, including 'Junoon' and 'Geet', established him as a reliable lead. Many films that later propelled Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar to stardom were once considered for him.
Wadhavan's early life offered every sign of a promising future. He was born in Mumbai on November 2, 1968, and was an outstanding student who received scholarships throughout college. After completing his engineering degree in Delhi, he planned to pursue an MBA. Although he secured a seat at IIM Lucknow, he chose the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute in Mumbai instead, and this choice set the stage for dramatic change.
During his MBA studies, a prominent fashion designer spotted him and offered him modelling work. The opportunity quickly transformed his routine. He worked on 67 advertisements and fashion shows in a single year. As his modelling commitments grew, attending MBA classes became unmanageable, and he dropped out after two semesters. He then pursued acting and made his entry into films in the late 1980s.
His true breakthrough came in 1991 with 'Aai Milan Ki Raat', which became a box office hit and quickly made him a household name. He followed it with roughly 17 to 18 films over the next four to five years, appearing in titles such as 'Balma', 'Dil Ki Baazi', 'Geet' and 'Paapi Gudiya'.
At the height of his popularity, he married in 1990 and became a father at a young age. Personal problems then began to mount, and they gradually affected his work. Wadhavan has openly said that he let his personal struggles outweigh his professional ambitions.
He eventually left India and spent a long period away from the film industry. When he came back, the landscape of Bollywood had shifted, and his earlier connections with makers and directors had largely faded. His first marriage ended in divorce in 2000. His first wife, Chhaya Parekh, a former model and acclaimed painter, is now known as Chhaya Smriti Mirani. He remarried in 2003.
In an interview, he said, 'I went abroad to shoot a film and never returned.' His extended absence from Mumbai resulted in lost ties with producers and directors. He also described the big films he rejected or missed, many of which became landmarks for other actors. 'Phool Aur Kaante' was first offered to him, and he was also approached for 'Deewana', a part later played by Shah Rukh Khan. He lost 'Yeh Dillagi' after arriving late to a meeting with Yash Chopra, and Saif Ali Khan later took the role. He stated that during 1991 and 1992 he was the first choice of many directors and was far ahead of Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar in terms of work.
