How Anjaan’s Verses Shaped Hindi Cinema in the 70s and 80s

Anjaan’s lyrical journey began in the early 1950s after he arrived in Mumbai from Varanasi. While teaching tuition to make ends meet, he wrote for small‑budget films and non‑film albums, slowly building a portfolio that would later define an era. The turning point arrived with the 1963 film "Godaan," where his song "Chali Aaj Gori Piya Ki Nagriya" resonated with audiences. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, his partnership with music directors such as Kalyanji‑Anandji, Laxmikant‑Pyarelal, and R.D. Burman produced chart‑topping numbers for Amitabh Bachchan’s blockbusters, including "Don" ("Khaye Ke Paan Banaras Wala"), "Mukkaddar Ka Sikandar," "Lavaaris," and "Roti Kapda Aur Makaan." Anjaan’s verses blended colloquial Hindi with Bhojpuri idioms, giving his songs a distinctive regional flavor that appealed nationwide. Over his career he contributed to more than 300 films and wrote upwards of 1,500 songs, influencing the soundscape of Hindi cinema for decades. He passed away on September 13, 1997, shortly after his only poetry collection, "Ganga Tatha Ka Banjara," was released by Amitabh Bachchan.
