Ancient Swayambhu Temple in Visakhapatnam Marks Diwali
The festival of lights signifies the triumph of prosperity and the divine descent of Lakshmi. In Visakhapatnam, the Kanak Mahalakshmi Temple stands out as a beacon of faith, renowned for its historical origins and extraordinary worship practices.
The temple’s most remarkable characteristic is its open-air sanctum. Abandoning the conventional dome structure, the shrine leaves the idol exposed to the heavens. When Diwali diyas and festive illuminations brighten the premises, the unroofed shrine radiates an ethereal glow that captivates every visitor.
Faithful narratives describe the goddess as swayambhu, spontaneously manifesting from the ground. Legend states that the sacred figure was retrieved from an ancient well in 1912 and reverently placed in its present location. As the city’s presiding deity, she is credited with safeguarding the region and answering earnest supplications.
Festive seasons like Dhanteras and Diwali trigger a massive influx of pilgrims. The idol is resplendent in centuries-old gold and silver regalia, symbolizing "Kanak" or wealth. Merchants and families travel from distant states to seek blessings for commercial success and household harmony.
The worship environment encourages profound personal engagement. Unlike many orthodox temples, this site removes all physical barriers. Devotees step directly into the holy precincts to physically connect with the idol, offering personal rituals like sacred bathing and vermilion offerings. This hands-on approach is believed to amplify spiritual merit.
Nightly ceremonies intensify during the festival period. Spiritual leaders conduct rigorous mantra recitations, spectacular evening aartis, and traditional five-nectar abhishek. These practices are designed to attract divine favor. Daily operations run from 5 AM to 12 AM, with enhanced logistical support guaranteed for festival crowds.
Religious activities extend well beyond the autumn holidays. The annual Margashirsha celebration, spanning late autumn into early winter, maintains a steady pilgrimage flow, peaking on Thursdays. Pilgrims consistently affirm that devotion exercised at this unique sanctuary yields profound peace and material prosperity.
