Awards and Legacy of Amjad Ali Khan, India's Sarod Samrat
In recognition of his artistic contributions, Amjad Ali Khan has been honored with a string of prestigious awards. He received the UNESCO award in 1970, followed by India’s Padma Shri in 1975. The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award arrived in 1989, and the Padma Bhushan in 1991 further cemented his status as a cultural icon. The Government of India bestowed the Padma Vibhushan in 2001, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors.
Beyond medals, he holds honorary doctorates from several universities and has been granted a fellowship by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. These accolades reflect not only his virtuosity but also his role as a cultural ambassador who has preserved and promoted the sarod tradition for future generations.
