From Sarasangi Roots to National Honors: Amir Khan’s Musical Journey

Born into a family where the sarangi sang as often as the human voice, Amir Khan’s early years were steeped in music. His father, Ustad Shahmeer Khan, taught him the sarangi, but the young prodigy felt an irresistible pull toward singing.

Supported by his father’s encouragement, Amir began formal vocal training while also learning basic tabla rhythms. This multi‑instrumental exposure broadened his rhythmic sense and deepened his appreciation for melodic nuance.

The decision to remain independent of any single gharana proved pivotal. By absorbing lessons from visiting stalwarts, Amir fashioned a personal idiom that later defined the Indore gharana. This school is characterised by its contemplative raga development, elegant taans, and sophisticated use of merukhand.

His artistic achievements were recognised at the highest levels. The Sangeet Natak Akademi honoured him for his contributions to classical music, and the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, one of the nation’s most prestigious civilian decorations.

Amir Khan’s legacy extends beyond the concert hall. He recorded for several classic films, adding his soulful voice to songs that remain beloved today. His untimely death in a 1974 road accident in Kolkata cut short a brilliant career, but his influence endures through students and recordings that keep the Indore gharana alive.
