Aishwarya Rai's Journey From Miss World to Film Stardom
Mumbai, October 31: Few Bollywood actresses have combined striking looks with genuine acting skill as successfully as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Her journey began in the world of modelling, and within a short time she had gained recognition far beyond India.
The Miss World crown opened a new chapter in her life, bringing offers from the film industry. Interestingly, her original life plan did not involve acting. Aishwarya had once aspired to become an architect and had even enrolled in the course. Fate, however, led her toward an entirely different future, one that established her as a celebrated name in Indian and global cinema.
Aishwarya Rai was born on November 1, 1973, in Mangalore, Karnataka. Her father, Krishnaraj Rai, was a marine engineer, and her mother, Vrinda Rai, is a writer. Her elder brother, Aditya Rai, worked in the merchant navy. The family later relocated to Mumbai, where Aishwarya completed her education, including her architecture studies at college.
Modelling gradually became a stronger interest for her during these years. Several advertising assignments followed. Her appearance in a cold drink advertisement alongside Aamir Khan and Mahima Chaudhry brought her into the spotlight. Her catchy line 'Hi, I'm Sanjana' from the commercial became widely remembered.
The year 1994 changed the direction of her life. She competed in the Miss India pageant, where Sushmita Sen emerged as the winner and Aishwarya took the first runner-up position. She later represented India at the Miss World competition and won the title. Her fame rose quickly after this achievement. At that point, she was pursuing the second year of her architecture degree.
In an interview, Aishwarya recalled that after becoming Miss World, she checked whether she could continue her studies and finish her degree with her classmates. But the growing number of film opportunities ultimately pulled her career toward cinema.
In 1997, she debuted in acting with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film 'Iruvar'. Her first Hindi film, 'Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya', was released the same year and featured Bobby Deol opposite her. Early in her career, success did not come easily. The 1998 Tamil film 'Jeans' gave her recognition in South Indian cinema.
The 1999 film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, became a significant hit for her. She shared the screen with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn and played Nandini, a character that earned her praise and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Her career reached new heights with 'Devdas' in 2002. Co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, she played Paro, and audiences admired both her acting and look. She won another Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the film. Later, she worked in films such as 'Dhoom 2', 'Guru', 'Jodhaa Akbar', 'Sarkar Raj', 'Guzaarish', and 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'.
Aishwarya has acted in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and English films. She has also been a recognisable figure of Indian cinema at the Cannes International Film Festival. In 2003, she became part of the Cannes Film Festival jury. In 2009, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, and the Government of France awarded her the Order of Arts and Letters.
On the personal front, Aishwarya married actor Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007. The couple met during film work, and their friendship grew into love over time. Their daughter, Aaradhya, was born in November 2011. Even after marriage, Aishwarya continued her film career while managing her family responsibilities.
