  • Private Spacecraft Odysseus Makes History With Moon Landing 50 Years After Last US Lunar Mission world news

New Delhii: It was a historic moment for the United States as the Odysseus spacecraft softly landed on the moon on Thursday (local time), breaking a 50-year hiatus since the last American lunar landing. The Nova-C lander, developed by Intuitive Machines (IM) – a commercial space company – also achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first privately-owned spacecraft to reach the lunar surface. This was the first time an American spacecraft had made a soft landing on the moon since the end of the Apollo program in 1972.

The Odysseus landing followed India’s successful lunar mission in August 2023, when the Chandrayaan-3 lander became the first Indian spacecraft to land safely on the moon. India also accomplished a historic first by landing a robotic rover on the lunar South Pole, a region that had never been explored before in the 21st century.

LIVE NOW: NASA science is landing on the Moon aboard @Int_Machines’ uncrewed Nova-C lander, named Odysseus.

“We are on the surface, and we are transmitting,” Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus announced on the webcast. “Welcome to the moon.” The company has not yet confirmed the status of the lander, but it has established contact with the moon. The Odysseus spacecraft landed near Malapert A, a crater near the moon’s south pole.

According to NASA, this site is “(A) relatively flat and safe region is within the heavily cratered southern highlands on the side of the Moon visible from Earth.” The spacecraft faced some communication issues before landing, and it missed the expected landing time.

However, an Intuitive Machines flight controller reported that the lander was “not dead yet” and they had received a “faint signal”. The US is the only country that has sent humans to the moon, with the last manned mission being Apollo 17 in 1972. NASA said it selected this landing site for Intuitive Machines’ first mission because it wanted to learn more about the lunar environment and how communications work in this area. NASA also has plans to explore the lunar south pole because it believes it is the ideal location for a future astronaut base.

  • Like India, Why Are Farmers Protesting In Europe? A Breakdown Of Main Issues | world news

New Delhi: Thousands of Indian farmers are camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana as part of the “Delhi Chalo” protest march. Not just India but farmers across European union nations are protesting too. For months, Europe has witnessed waves of protests by farmers who are unhappy with their situation. They have taken to the streets, blocked roads and even surrounded the capital of France with tractors. While the farmers in India are demanding a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.

Implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pension, no hike in the electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases and “justice” for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence in Uttar Pradesh, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013 and compensation to the families. of the farmers who died during the agitation against the three farm laws in 2020-21 are the other demands of farmers in India.

Here are some of the main factors behind the European farmers’ discontent:

Squeeze Of Low Prices, High Costs

One of the biggest challenges facing farmers is the gap between what they spend and what they earn. Many of their costs, such as energy, fertiliser and transport, have gone up, especially after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Meanwhile, their prices have gone down, as governments and retailers try to keep food affordable for consumers.

According to Eurostat, the average farm-gate price – the price farmers get for their products – fell by almost 9% between the third quarter of 2022 and the same period in 2021. Only a few products, such as olive oil, which faced shortages. , saw an increase.

    Threat of cheap imports

Another source of frustration for farmers is the competition from foreign imports, which they see as unfair and harmful. In some parts of Europe, such as Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, farmers have protested against the influx of cheap produce from Ukraine, which benefited from EU trade concessions after Russia’s invasion. The EU imposed some limits on Ukrainian exports, but they were not enough to satisfy the farmers.

In other parts of Europe, such as France, farmers are worried about the impact of trade deals with other regions, such as Mercosur, the South American bloc. They fear that these deals will expose them to products that do not meet the same standards as EU products, such as sugar, grain and meat.

    Climate Change Challenge

Farmers are also feeling the effects of climate change, which is making their work more difficult and unpredictable. Extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods and wildfires, have damaged crops and livestock in many countries. For example, in Spain, some water reservoirs are only 4% full, while in Greece, fires destroyed about 20% of the annual farm income in 2023.

Farmers in southern Europe have not protested much so far, but that could change if their governments impose water restrictions or other measures to cope with the crisis.

    Pressure Of EU Regulations

Farmers also complain that they are over-regulated by the EU, which imposes rules and standards that they find burdensome and unrealistic. They feel that they are caught between the conflicting demands of providing cheap food and protecting the environment.

The EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP), which provides €55bn a year in subsidies to farmers, has traditionally favored large-scale and intensive farming. This has led to consolidation and concentration in the sector, with the number of farms dropping by more than a third since 2005. Many small and medium-sized farms struggle to survive in a low-profit market, while many large farms are heavily indebted.

The EU has recently adopted a new strategy, called “farm to fork”, which is part of its ambitious green deal to make the bloc carbon-neutral by 2050. The strategy aims to make farming more sustainable and healthy, by setting targets such as reducing pesticides by 50%, fertilisers by 20%, and increasing organic farming to 25% of the land by 2030.

However, many farmers are skeptical and worried about the impact of these targets on their productivity and competitiveness. They argue that they need more support and incentives to make the transition, and that they should not be penalized for their contribution to food security and rural development.

New Delhi: In a surprising turn of events, Bilawal Bhutto, the chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has given up his ambition to become the prime minister of Pakistan and instead secured the president’s post for his father, Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the co-chairman of PPP. Bilawal has struck a deal with Nawaz Sharif, the leader of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), to form a coalition government in the country, ending the political uncertainty that prevailed for 12 days after the general elections.

In today’s DNA, Zee News analyzed the deal between PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto and PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif to form a coalition government in Pakistan, ending the political uncertainty that prevailed for 12 days after the general elections.

According to the deal, Nawaz Sharif’s younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, will be the prime minister for the first three years, while Bilawal will be the deputy prime minister. In the last two years, Bilawal will take over as the prime minister, while Shahbaz will become the deputy prime minister. Zardari will be the president for the entire five-year term.

The coalition partners have also decided to share the key ministries among themselves, with PML-N getting the finance, foreign affairs, defence, and interior portfolios, while PPP getting the information, law, energy, and railways portfolios. The coalition will also include the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), who have won 17 and 4 seats respectively in the National Assembly.

The coalition has a comfortable majority of 150 seats in the 272-member National Assembly, while the main opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Khan, has only 31 seats. The PTI has alleged massive rigging in the elections and has refused to accept the results. It has also announced that it will boycott the oath-taking ceremony of the new government and launch a nationwide protest.

The coalition has been welcomed by the international community, especially by the United States and China, who are the major allies and investors of Pakistan. The coalition has also expressed its willingness to improve its relations with India, Afghanistan, and other neighboring countries, and to cooperate in the fight against terrorism and extremism. However, the coalition also faces many challenges, such as the economic crisis, the energy shortage, the security situation, and the judicial activism. It remains to be seen how the coalition will overcome these hurdles and deliver on its promises to the people of Pakistan.
