  • Putin Mentions 'World War 3' After Claiming Landslide Election Win Without Facing Serious Competition | world news

New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday issued a caution to Western nations, stating that any direct engagement between Russia and the NATO forces led by the US could precipitate the globe to the brink of a third world war, a situation he believes is undesirable. tomost. The conflict in Ukraine has escalated tensions between Moscow and Western countries to levels not seen since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Despite frequently highlighting the dangers of nuclear conflict, Putin asserts that the use of nuclear arms in Ukraine has never been a necessity for him. .

In a historic victory, President Vladimir Putin secured an unprecedented win in Russia's recent election, reinforcing his strong hold on power. This triumph, he stated, validates Moscow's stance against the West and its decision to deploy forces to Ukraine.

Putin, who ascended to power in 1999 after a career as a KGB lieutenant colonel, emphasized that the election outcome is a clear signal to Western leaders that they must engage with a more assertive Russia for the foreseeable future.

At 71, Putin is poised to begin a new six-year term, which could make him the longest-serving Russian leader in over two centuries, surpassing Josef Stalin.

With an 87.8% vote share according to the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM) and 87% according to the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM), Putin achieved the highest post-Soviet electoral result. Initial official results seem to confirm these figures. However, several countries including the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom have questioned the election's integrity, citing political detentions and media restrictions.

The Communist contender Nikolai Kharitonov came in second with nearly 4%, followed by the newcomer Vladislav Davankov, and the ultra-nationalist Leonid Slutsky, as indicated by preliminary results.

In his victory address in Moscow, Putin pledged to focus on the challenges linked to Russia's ongoing military actions in Ukraine and to bolster the Russian armed forces. Putin declared to his audience that unity is Russia's strength, and that no adversary has ever, or will ever, succeed in intimidating or subduing them.

The crowd erupted into chants of “Putin” and “Russia” as he took the stage and concluded his speech.

Despite the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in an Arctic prison, which sparked protests against Putin across Russia and internationally, Putin dismissed the impact of these demonstrations on the election results, calling Russia's electoral process democratic.

Addressing Navalny's death for the first time, Putin expressed sorrow and revealed that he had been open to a prisoner exchange involving Navalny shortly before his passing.

  • Joe Biden Indirectly Calls Donald Trump 'Mentally Unfit' For Presidential Job world news

WASHINGTON – The big news this week, President Joe Biden said at a weekend Washington roast, was that two candidates had clinched their party's nomination for president. But one was too old, too mentally unfit for the job, he said. “The other's me,” Biden quipped.

The digs against Republican Donald Trump kept coming from the president at the annual Gridiron Club and Foundation Dinner, as Biden deflected ongoing criticism that his memory is hazy and he appears confused, instead highlighting moments when the 77-year-old Trump has slipped up, too.

“Don't tell him, he thinks he's running against Barack Obama, that's what he said,” said Biden, 81, who also quipped that he was staying up way past his bedtime.

It was the first time Biden has attended the dinner during his presidency, and comes as the 2024 election looms and the rematch between Biden and Trump heats up. The annual bacchanalia, now in its 139th year, traces its history to 1885 — that was the year President Grover Cleveland refused to attend. Every president since has come to at least one Gridiron.

Biden veered quickly into the somber, though, highlighting what he sees as a real threat to democracy should Trump — who continues to falsely claim the 2020 election was stolen — return to the White House. The speech had echoes of Biden's campaign remarks, criticizing Trump as well as too soft on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We live in an unprecedented moment in democracy,” he said. “An unprecedented moment for history. Democracy and freedom are literally under attack. Putin's on the march in Europe. My predecessor bows down to him and says to him, 'do whatever the hell you want.'”

Biden then introduced the Ukrainian ambassador, Oksana Markarova, and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.

“We will not bow down. They will not bow down, and I will not bow down,” he said.

Biden, dressed in white-tie attire as is the custom, brought his daughter Ashley.

The dinner has a reputation as a night of bipartisan mirth, and was jam-packed with politicians and who's-who of Washington, including Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff, at least eight other Cabinet members, at least five members of Congress. , five governors and at least five ambassadors. Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who's in town for St. Patrick's Day, also attended.

Also speaking at the dinner were Harris, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, and Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican.

Biden closed out the dinner, speaking also about the importance of a free press. Although he may not agree with everything the news media prints, he said, he understands the necessity of journalism and said he was still working to bring home journalists Evan Gershovich and Austin Tice, one held in Russia, the other who disappeared during a reporting trip in Syria.

“Good journalism holds a mirror up to society,” he said. “We need you.”

Biden and Harris were seated at the head table along with other administration officials and the foreign leaders, plus Gridiron president Dan Balz of the Washington Post. Seated also at the table were Balz's bosses, the Post's Executive Editor Sally Buzbee and the newspaper's owner, Jeff Bezos.

  • Electoral Bonds: Funds kept coming to BJP throughout the year, while there was movement in the accounts of Congress and TMC during elections…

New Delhi. Lok Sabha elections have been announced. But the issue of electoral bonds is still burning. The BJP, the ruling party at the Centre, has been the biggest beneficiary of electoral bonds, redeeming a total of Rs 6,061 crore between April 2019 and February 2024, according to data published by the Election Commission and State Bank of India. During the same period, Trinamool Congress (TMC) managed to cash in Rs 1,610 crore and Congress managed to cash in Rs 1,422 crore. A different pattern of fund arrival is visible in all these political parties that have received electoral bonds. The BJP earned more or less the same amount of cash throughout the year, while the fortunes of TMC and Congress were more closely linked to elections and especially electoral victories.

SBI issued electoral bonds in 22 tranches between April 2019 and February 2024. In these instalments, the BJP encashed an average of Rs 275.5 crore in each window, almost three times more than TMC's average of Rs 73.2 crore and Congress's Rs 64.6 crore.

After lagging in July 2019, BJP received Rs 185.2 crore in October 2019. Whereas Congress encashed only Rs 1.8 crore. This fund was received before the assembly elections in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The BJP won in Haryana with the support of the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) and in Maharashtra with ally Shiv Sena (undivided at that time), while the Congress-Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) alliance came to power in Jharkhand.

While TMC received Rs 43.4 crore before the West Bengal assembly elections, BJP and Congress received Rs 43.4 crore during this period. Only Rs 25.4 crore and Rs 10.1 crore were received respectively.

All three parties saw their next rise in April 2021, when elections were going on in West Bengal. That month, BJP encashed Rs 291.5 crore, Congress encashed Rs 58.8 crore and TMC encashed Rs 55.4 crore.

However, the BJP recorded a significant improvement in becoming the opposition party in the Assembly despite a negligible presence in the state, in the two electoral bond windows after the results (July and October 2021), compared to TMC's Rs 249.5 crore which returned to power for the third consecutive time. Only Rs 80 crores were encashed. Whereas Congress, which reached zero in the assembly elections, received Rs 58.1 crore from electoral bonds after the elections.

In January 2022, BJP's election fund increased to Rs 662.2 crore, while Congress's income also increased by Rs 119.3 crore. Funding reduced just before the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The BJP came to power in all the states except one – Punjab, where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ousted the Congress from power.

Later in 2022, during the assembly elections held in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh in November and December, the BJP cashed in Rs 990.3 crore in three phases, while the Congress collected Rs 104.6 crore.

In a direct contest between the two national parties, BJP registered a massive victory in Gujarat, while Congress shocked the incumbent BJP in Himachal. While BJP encashed Rs 192.8 crore in January 2023 immediately after its victory, Congress could collect only Rs 91 lakh.
