  • US Bridge Collapse: Six Workers Presumed Dead After Ship Knocks Down Baltimore Bridge | world news

New Delhi: In the early hours of Tuesday, a catastrophic event unfolded in Baltimore Harbor when a large cargo ship, disabled by a power outage, collided with a bridge. This led to the bridge’s collapse and the subsequent closure of one of the busiest ports on the US Eastern Seaboard. Six workers are feared dead in the incident. The hazardous conditions in the debris-filled waters forced the suspension of active search-and-rescue operations about 18 hours post-accident, as announced by US Coast Guard and Maryland State Police officials.

Given the icy water temperatures and the time that had passed since the accident, Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath expressed no hope of finding the missing workers alive. State Police Colonel Roland Butler shared plans to resume the recovery mission for the workers’ remains after sunrise on Wednesday. The workers, along with two survivors who were rescued, were part of a crew repairing potholes on the bridge.

The Singapore-flagged container ship Dali, en route from Baltimore Harbor to Sri Lanka, struck a support pylon of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River around 1:30 am (0530 GMT). A section of the 1.6-mile (2.57 km) bridge quickly fell into the icy river, taking vehicles and people with it.

A greater disaster was averted when the ship’s power failure was reported before the collision, allowing officials to halt traffic on the bridge. “These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” said Maryland Governor Wes Moore during a midday news briefing. He confirmed that the bridge was up to code with no known structural issues.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott likened the scene of twisted metal erupting into the sky to an action movie. Social media footage captured the vessel’s impact with the bridge in the dark, the headlights of vehicles on the span visible as it plunged into the water and the ship ignited.

Attack On Turbat Naval Air Base

Baloch militants armed with weapons attempted to breach a key naval air base in Pakistan’s volatile Balochistan province on the intervening night of March 25–26. However, security forces successfully thwarted the assault, resulting in the elimination of all four terrorists. The incident occurred on Monday night in Turbat, a district known for its unrest within the scarcely inhabited province. Makran Commissioner Saeed Ahmed Umrani informed the media that security forces effectively prevented an armed terrorist incursion at the PNS Siddique Naval Air Base, one of the largest naval air stations in the nation.

The banned Balochistan Liberation Army claimed that its Majeed Brigade was behind the attack. This is the third major attack on security forces and installations this year in Balochistan claimed by the BLA with the first two attacks being also being repulsed by security forces.

  • Russia’s Putin Blames ‘Radical Islamists’ For Moscow Terror Attack, Questions Ukraine’s Role | world news

New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday held radical Islamists responsible for deadly terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall in Moscow’s outskirts, leaving several unresolved issues. “We know that the crime was committed by the hands of radical Islamists, whose ideology the Islamic world itself has been fighting for centuries,” Putin said during a Monday briefing on the post-attack measures.

Putin said it is already known who carried out the terrorist attack, but now “we are interested in who ordered the crime”, as reported by Xinhua news agency. Putin criticized the US for its attempts to persuade the global community of the absence of any connection to Kiev in the tragic event.

Putin pointed out that there are still unanswered questions. He emphasized the need to determine whether radical Islamic groups, including those with terrorist links, have a vested interest in targeting Russia, a nation advocating for equitable resolutions to the intensifying Middle East crisis.

He also highlighted the necessity to understand the rationale behind the terrorists’ attempt to flee to Ukraine post-attack in Crocus, and who might have been expecting them there. Putin described the incident as a scare tactic and posed the question of who stands to gain from such acts.

Putin insisted that the probe into the attack must be conducted with utmost professionalism, impartiality, and devoid of political slant, despite the widespread clamor for retribution against the culprits.

In a sharp retort, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mocked Putin’s assertions in his evening address, labeling the Russian president as the sole non-terrorist in his view, despite Putin’s long history of fostering terror over the past two decades.

Zelenskiy’s remarks alluded to claims that Putin has orchestrated numerous violent incidents within Russia since his rise to power in 2000.

Zelenskiy predicted that the end of Putin’s reign would also mark the cessation of the need for terror and violence. Ukraine has refuted any involvement in the recent shooting, with Zelenskiy accusing Putin of deflecting culpability.

The US has expressed its belief in the Islamic State’s involvement. American authorities have disclosed that they had forewarned Russia of potential imminent threats earlier this month, with intelligence suggesting that the Afghan-based Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K) was the likely perpetrator.

  • 'War With People's Everyday Lives': Zelenskyy After Russia Launches Largest Airstrike On Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure | world news

Kyiv: In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia has unleashed a devastating airstrike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, marking one of the most extensive attacks in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The assault, characterized by a barrage of drone and missile strikes, targeted vital energy facilities across Ukraine, leaving a trail of destruction and plunging millions into darkness.

The attacks, which unfolded on Friday, have resulted in catastrophic consequences, with reports indicating the loss of at least five lives and widespread power outages affecting over a million individuals. Ukrainian authorities have scrambled to address the emergency, seeking assistance from neighboring countries such as Poland, Romania, and Slovakia to mitigate the impact of the disrupted energy supply.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wasted no time in condemning the brazen attack, denouncing it as a direct assault on the lives and livelihoods of ordinary citizens. Describing the strikes as tantamount to “war with people's everyday lives,” President Zelenskyy reiterated his plea for Western allies to provide critical air defense systems to bolster Ukraine's defenses against further aggression.

“The Russian airstrikes this morning were heinous, with the deliberate goal of causing structural damage to society's life rather than military damage to our ability to defend ourselves. This is terror, by definition, without any disguises,” President Zelenskyy stated emphatically.

    The strikes harmed over thirty people… pic.twitter.com/8IUikfXlxm — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) March 22, 2024

The impact of the strikes has been felt acutely across Ukraine, with significant damage inflicted on key energy infrastructure. Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, Oleksiy Kuleba, revealed that over a million consumers were left without electricity, with major outages reported in regions such as Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Poltava.

Energy Minister German Galushchenko described the onslaught as the largest attack on Ukraine's energy industry in recent memory, underscoring the severity of the situation. The strikes targeted critical infrastructure, including power transmission lines and the Zaporizhia power plant, Europe's largest nuclear energy site.

The attack on the Zaporizhzhia power plant, seized by Russian troops in the early days of the conflict but powered by Ukrainian lines, raised concerns about the safety and stability of the facility. Although shelling damaged one of the power transmission lines feeding the plant, authorities have assured that there is no immediate risk of a breach or nuclear incident.

Despite the widespread destruction, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal sought to reassure the public that the situation in the energy sector was under control, and widespread blackouts were not necessary. Efforts to restore power and repair damaged infrastructure are already underway, with specialized teams mobilized to mitigate the impact of the attacks.

As the dust settles on the aftermath of this devastating airstrike, the international community has condemned Russia's aggression and expressed solidarity with Ukraine. Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council, called for urgent action to provide additional air defense interceptors to Ukraine, stressing the need to defend against further attacks.

The attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for concerted efforts to address the ongoing conflict. As tensions continue to simmer, the plight of the Ukrainian people remains at the forefront of global attention, with calls for justice and accountability echoing across diplomatic corridors.

  • Pakistan's Gwadar Port Freed From Seize After 7 Terrorists Gunned Down: Report | world news

Pakistan's Gwadar Port today came under seizure from terrorists and was freed after the city police gunned down seven terrorists. The assailants entered the Gwadar Port Authority Complex forcibly and opened fire in the area. The police said that while some blasts also took place at the site, the firing completely stopped after the assasilants were gunned down. Majeed Brigade of the proscribed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to reports, Makran Commissioner Saeed Ahmed Umrani mentioned that there were multiple explosions during the attack. He also stated that the operation to clear out the attackers was still ongoing. Initially, Captain (retd) Zohaib Mohsin, Senior Superintendent of Police in Gwadar, mentioned that the gunfire had ceased entirely. Earlier, Umrani noted that a significant number of police and security forces had arrived at the scene while the intense gunfire was still ongoing.

According to a statement from the United Nations Department for Safety and Security, the attack on the complex was characterized by 'several explosions followed by continuous firing'. The facility in question accommodates various government and paramilitary offices. Furthermore, the statement clarified that there were no immediate reports of casualties. It specified that seven personnel from three UN agencies stationed in Gwadar and two UN agencies on missions were confirmed to be “safe and accounted for.”

    What Is Majeed Brigade?

The Majeed Brigade, an integral part of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), emerged in 2011 as a highly formidable guerrilla cell within the BLA's ranks. Named in honor of a guard who lost his life while attempting to assassinate Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the former Prime Minister and founder of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), this brigade has gained notoriety for its lethal operations. Its activities extend beyond Pakistan's borders, with documented presence in Afghanistan, a fact corroborated even by Indian media outlets.

There are allegations suggesting that the group maintains sanctuaries along the Pak-Iran border region. Referred to as the BLA's suicide squad, the so-called Majeed Brigade predominantly focuses its attacks on security forces and Chinese interests within Pakistan. Notably, it claimed responsibility for the April 2022 suicide attack targeting the Confucius Institute at Karachi University.

Throughout 2022, the brigade orchestrated a series of assaults, including those directed at military camps in Balochistan's Naushki and Panjgur districts. In these incidents, militants engaged security forces in prolonged confrontations lasting up to three days.

  • Cash-Strapped Pak PM Sharif & Cabinet Ministers To Forgo Salaries | world news

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his Cabinet on Wednesday unanimously decided to forego their salaries and related benefits due to the precarious economic condition of the country.

The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting as part of the government's austerity policies, aimed at curbing unnecessary expenditures, according to a press release by the PM Office.

The Cabinet has already introduced measures restricting foreign trips funded by the government, ordering federal ministers, parliamentarians, and government officials not to go on foreign trips by using government funds without prior approval.

The measures are focused on promoting fiscal responsibility and optimizing governmental resources in the face of economic challenges, due to which the country needs a fresh loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Last week, President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also decided to forego their salaries while in office citing similar reasons.

Former president Arif Alvi was drawing Rs 8,46,550 per month, which was fixed by Parliament in 2018. Zardari is one of the richest politicians in Pakistan. When Sharif was the prime minister in his earlier term, a similar measure was announced in February 2023. .

However, these measures are commonly considered cosmetic to show that the government was sharing the burden of the people badly hit by grinding inflation.

In reality, the president, the prime minister and most of the ministers belong to the privileged, rich class and are not dependent on their salaries.

Incidentally, earlier in the day, a statement from the IMF said that it has reached a staff-level agreement with cash-strapped Pakistan that will enable it to get the next tranche of USD 1.1 billion of the earlier sanctioned loan.
