  • Why PM Modi Is Writing Letters To 100 Million Families

The world’s largest healthcare program in India is running up against a challenge: many of its 500 million beneficiaries don’t have a clue about it, as they didn’t have to enroll for it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s solution is to tackle the problem at its roots. He is writing letters to 100 million families educating them about the benefits of the program, which automatically registered 40 percent of India’s population that make up the bottom of the population as per the socio-economic caste census data, said Vinod K. Paul, a member of NITI Aayog, the government’s policy think tank.

“It’s a big step toward access of services, it will change the health system by making costs rational,” said Paul, who’s the architect of the program that could influence Modi’s fate in national polls next year. “Many Jobs will be created. It will be a stimulus for growth,” he said in an interview at his New Delhi office on Wednesday.

A month since it was formally unveiled, the healthcare program, ‘Ayushman Bharat,’ Hindi for long live India, has benefited 112,000 people and approved claims totaling 1.4 billion rupees ($20 million). The government expects to spend up to 120 billion rupees annually on premium payments as PM Modi tries to seek support of the poor before elections.

    Trust Model

Paul, a pediatrician who became a member of the NITI Aayog last year, described Ayushman Bharat as a massive assurance firm. The program is being implemented by most of India’s 29 states on a trust model where pooling of premium and settlement of claims is handled by a trust and not an insurance company.

The health protection program promises an annual cover of $6,818, and the entire hospitalization cost is borne by the federal and state governments in the ratio of 60:40.

Paul’s home-state Punjab, which had no state-funded insurance program, has gone a step further by taking it to a bigger chunk of population using its own funds. Himachal Pradesh, another north Indian state, is extending benefits to even the economically better-off at a premium.

The program is based on cumulative learning from states schemes and global best practices, Paul said, adding the private sector is playing an active role in it. Half of the 15,000 hospitals that enrolled for the program are from the private sector. The government is going through another 49,000 applications from health institutions that want to be a part of the plan.

Spending on health pushed more than 52 million people below the poverty line in India, according to a 2017 World Health Organization report. The world’s-fastest growing economy spends about 1 percent of its gross domestic product on healthcare and aims to increase it to 2.5 percent by 2025 but has to overcome challenges from poor health

  • PM Modi Stresses on Importance of Character Building, Calls for ‘Wholesome’ Education in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasised the importance of character building over literacy and called for ‘wholesome’ education in the country.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of “Conference on Academic Leadership on Education for Resurgence” organised by the HRD Ministry.

“Knowledge and education are not restricted to books. The purpose of education is to enable balanced growth of every dimension of a human being, which is not possible without innovation,” Modi said.

“Ambedkar, Deen Dayal Upadhya and Ram Manohar Lohiya always emphasized on character-building over literacy. Swami Vivekananda stressed on wholesome education that makes us a human,” he added.

The prime minister asserted that without innovation life would become a burden.
“Innovation is very important because without it, life seems like a burden. In our ancient universities like Takshshila, Nalanda and Vikramashila, innovation was given emphasis along with knowledge.
“I insist that students should give knowledge in classrooms of college, university but they also add them to the aspirations of the country,” he said.

  • PM post aspirants must not blend ignorance, falsehood: Arun Jaitley blasts Rahul Gandhi

Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s speech during the Lok Sabha debate on the Opposition’s no-confidence motion was “embarrassing” and “ignorant”, Union minister Arun Jaitley has said.

“If a participant happens to be a President of a national political party nourishing Prime Ministerial aspirations, every word he speaks should be precious. His facts should convey credibility. Facts are always sacrosanct. None should ever trivialise the debate. Those who desire to be Prime Minister never blend ignorance, falsehood and acrobatics,” said Jaitley in a Facebook post on Saturday, commenting on Gandhi’s allegations against the Narendra Modi government.

“Regrettably, the President of the Congress Party missed a great opportunity. If this was his best argument for 2019, God help his party,” said Jaitley. “To hallucinate after an embarrassing performance that he has won future election or to hallucinate that he is the reincarnation of Mark Antony being complemented by friends and foes alike, may give him self-satisfaction but for serious observers it is more than just self-praise – in fact a serious problem.”

He said Gandhi’s allegations about India’s deal with France to buy Rafale fighter planes showed that he was “ignorant of facts”. Alleging corruption in the deal to purchase the planes, Gandhi had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi took away the contract to manufacture the planes from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and gave it to “one of his businessmen friends”.

Gandhi claimed that defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the government would reveal the price of the deal for purchase of Rafale, but later refused on the grounds that there was a secrecy agreement between India and France.

Jaitley rejected the allegations and accused Gandhi of “concocting” a conversation with France’s president Emmanuel Macron. He said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government had entered a secrecy pact with France about the Rafale deal, but Gandhi was “wholly unaware” of it.

“…to insist on disclosure of financial details, which indirectly involves the disclosures of the strategic equipment on the aircraft, is to hurt national interest. Cost gives away a clue to the weaponry in the aircraft,” said Jaitley.

  • PM Modi slams Oppn, refers to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘unwanted hug’ at UP rally in Shahjahanpur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke about the “unwanted hug” he received from Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Parliament, saying it was a result of the opposition’s lack of reason for their no-confidence motion against his government.

“We asked the reasons for their no confidence but when they failed to give it they ended up giving an unwanted hug,” Modi said, referring to Gandhi’s embrace during a debate on the no-confidence motion moved by TDP in Lok Sabha and supported by various opposition parties.

Modi’s BJP-led NDA won the no-trust vote with nearly three-fourths of majority.

Addressing a Kisan Kalyan Rally in Shahjahanpur, he said the coming together of several parties against the BJP will be an opportunity as they were running after the prime minister’s chair, ignoring the poor, youth and farmers. He used a Hindi expression that translates to more the parties, more the marshy land in which the ‘lotus’ blooms.

“If one dal (party) is added to another dal, then it becomes dal-dal (marshy land) which is favourable for ‘kamal’ to blossom,” he said.

Lotus is the election symbol of the BJP.

Accusing previous governments of not having the will to help farmers, Modi listed the key decisions taken by his government for welfare of farmers and criticised the parties who ruled in the past for lacking pro-farmer intentions.

He also said that for the first time the government has decided to allow mills to produce ethanol from molasses and sugarcane juice from December 1.

After reaching out to voters in Azamgarh, Mirzapur and Varanasi last week, Modi addressed the rally in Shahjahanpur, the biggest wholesale grain market and also a prominent cane growing district in Uttar Pradesh which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha.

This was his third visit to the state in less than a month. Farmers in large numbers from adjoining districts such as Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Sitapur, Bareilly and Badaun attended the rally.

  • Rahul Gandhi has seriously hurt image of Indian politician before the world: Jaitley

Accusing Rahul Gandhi of “concocting” a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Union Minister Arun Jaitley today said the Congress President has seriously hurt the image of an Indian politician before the world at large.

Participating in the debate on ‘no-confidence motion’ in the Lok Sabha yesterday Gandhi said that Macron told him that there was no binding secrecy clause in the Rafale deal. The statement was denied by the French government.

“Rahul Gandhi, by concocting a conversation with President Macron, has lowered his own credibility and seriously hurt the image of an Indian politician before the world at large,” Jaitley said in a Facebook post.

The minister also hit out at the Congress President accusing him of trivialising the no-confidence motion debate stressing “facts are always sacrosanct”.

“None should ever trivialise the debate. Those who desire to be Prime Minister never blend ignorance, falsehood and acrobatics.”

In the post titled “Frivolity and the No Confidence Motion”, Jaitley said the lead participants in the debate are normally senior political leaders. They are expected to raise the level of political discourse.

“A Vote of No Confidence against the Government is a serious business. It is not an occasion for frivolity,” he said.

The minister said if a participant in the debate happens to be a president of a national political party nourishing prime ministerial aspirations, every word he speaks should be precious. His facts should convey credibility.

The NDA government yesterday faced the no-confidence motion brought in by opposition in Parliament yesterday. The government won the motion by 325 against 126 votes in the Lok Sabha.

In his speech, Gandhi had launched a frontal attack on the NDA government over unfulfilled promises and questioned the Rafale deal, demanding answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on why he allegedly favoured a particular businessman in the contract.

Stating that Gandhi missed a great opportunity, Jaitley said “if this was his best argument for 2019, God help his party”.

Attacking Gandhi, Jaitley said his lack of understanding is not only confined to basic issues but also to the niceties of protocol.

“One should never misquote a conversation with a Head of Government or a Head of State. You do it once, serious people will be reluctant to speak to you or speak in your presence,” the minister said.

On Gandhi’s accusation about secrecy of the Rafale fighter jet deal, Jaitley said the UPA government itself had entered into the secrecy pact.

“Rahul has repeatedly shown that he is ignorant of facts. But to insist on disclosure of financial details, which indirectly involves the disclosures of the strategic equipment on the aircraft, is to hurt national interest. Cost gives away a clue to the weaponry in the aircraft,” Jaitley said.

He said there is no minister who either desires to change or is constitutionally entitled to change the Constitution of India.

Referring to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Jaitley said the last Indian politician who wanted the power to change the Constitution was Rahul’s grandmother and “she too failed”.

  • Day after PM hug, Rahul Gandhi says only love and compassion can build a nation

A day after creating a splash in the Lok Sabha by hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi+ , Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said that only way to build a nation was by harnessing love and compassion of people.

He said yesterday’s debate in Parliament on the no-confidence motion was about the prime minister using “hate, fear and anger” in the hearts of some people to build his narrative, and the Congress countering that through love and compassion.

The point of yesterday’s debate in Parliament.. PM uses Hate, Fear and Anger in the hearts of some of our people to build his narrative. We are going to prove that Love and Compassion in the hearts of all Indians, is the only way to build a nation (sic),” he said on Twitter.

Gandhi gave a 45-minute fiery speech during the no-confidence motion debate in the Lok Sabha yesterday, accusing the prime minister of unleashing “jumla strike” on people in the form of demonetisation, joblessness, Rafale deal, poor state of economy, mob violence, lynching, and incidents of alleged atrocities on Dalits and women.

After concluding his speech, Gandhi walked across the aisle to where the prime minister was sitting and hugged him, capping his blistering attack on Modi.

The prime minster shook Gandhi’s hands but ignored his call to stand so that he could hug the BJP leader. The Congress chief, however, embraced him as he remained seated.

Modi initially looked nonplussed and did not stand up to hug him, but recovered quickly and called Gandhi back and patted him on the back. He also appeared to say a few words, which were inaudible

  • No-confidence motion: Modi displayed arrogance of power, dashed hopes of A.P., says Chandrababu Naidu

After the no-confidence motion moved by the Telugu Desam Party was comprehensively defeated in the Lok Sabha on July 20 night, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of displaying “arrogance of power” and resorting to “cheap talk”.

Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat in Amaravati, Chandrababu rued that the prime minister did not promise justice to AP that suffered heavily because of the bifurcation in 2014.

Five crore people of A.P. hoped there will be repentance (on part of the central government) and that it will correct its mistakes. But the hopes were dashed,” the Chief Minister said.

“The Prime Minister is arrogant. He has displayed arrogance of power. He spoke in a manner mocking our State. He indulged in cheap talk,” Mr. Naidu alleged.

The Chief Minister wondered why the Prime Minister could not even say he would do justice to A.P. by rectifying the mistakes. “It’s extremely disappointing,” he added.

  • A jaadu ki jhappi, a wink & social media

Hugs may be silent, yet they speak volumes, said positivity speaker Carol CC Miller. On Friday, Rahul Gandhi’s hugging of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament spoke louder than his words.

Social media was agog with jokes and memes on the hug as well as the wink that followed the act. Around 6.30pm, hashtags Rahul Gandhi and RahulHugsModi were also trending on twitter.

  • PM Modi tears into Congress, counters Rahul’s charges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today offered a scathing rebuttal to Rahul Gandhi’s allegations and made a point-by-point refutation of the charges levelled against his government by the Congress and MPs and other opposition leaders.

The Prime Minister’s speech also marked the conclusion of the 12-hour-long marathon debate, which was followed by a voting on the no-confidence motion against his government.

The voting resulted in a comfortable win for the government with 325 MPs voting against the motion, while 126 MPs voted in favour of it. A total of 451 MPs participated in the voting.

Here is how PM Modi countered opposition charges in his speech:

    On Rafale deal with France

Following Rahul’s allegation of corruption in the Rafale strike, the Prime Minister said that he is astonished at the manner in which the Congress party is “trampling upon the truth”.

The Prime Minister alleged that the people of this country are being misled on the issue of Rafale deal.

The Prime Minister also responded to the French statement saying that a breach of the agreement between the two nations could impact security and operational capabilities of the defence equipment of India and France.

“Unfortunate that both countries had to respond to the allegations on this childish acts,” the Prime Minister retorted at Rahul’s allegations.

The Prime Minister dismissed the allegations by saying that the agreement signed between the two nations is “completely transparent”.

The Prime Minister slammed the Congress and said that it should refrain from indulging in “childish acts” and politics on matters related to national security.

    On Surgical strike

The Prime Minister lashed out Rahul’s reference to ‘jumla strike’ and equated it to the surgical strike carried out by India across Pakistan.

“You called the surgical strike a Jumla Strike. You can abuse me as much as you want. Stop insulting the Jawans of India. I will not tolerate this insult to our armed forces,” the PM retorted.

On conflict with China in Doklam

“When the entire country was working hand-in-hand to resolve the Doklam issue. The Congress to score their own political point met China’s ambassador. When you don’t have knowledge of an issue things get misconstrued. This affects the nation more than the person talking.”

    On Rahul Gandhi’s wink

The Prime Minister took at dig at the Congress president’s apparent post-hug wink in Parliament saying the entire nation saw what the eyes did today.

    On Rahul Gandhi’s hug

    1F26381F-8B45-4EB6-8D21-CB8B376DBE08

PM Modi mocked Rahul for gesturing him to stand from the seat before the now-famous hug, saying the Congress leader was in a hurry to unseat him and grab the PM’s chair, as he dubbed the no-trust vote an act of “arrogance”.

“In the morning, the voting was not over, the debate was also not over one member comes running to me saying- Utho Utho Utho (get up, get up)…What is his hurry to come to power? Let me tell this member it is the people who elected us. That is how we have come here,” PM Modi said taking a dig at Rahul’s move.
