  • Siddaramaiah plans Bengaluru jobs fair next month seeking to keep unemployment in spotlight in election year

The ruling Congress is gearing up to hold a jobs mela in Bengaluru in the last week of January in keeping with one of the election promises the party had made during the May assembly polls. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who chaired a meeting on Friday to assess the preparedness for such a jobs fair, announced a team of ministers to plan and effectively organise the event.

Industries Minister MB Patil, IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge, Labour Minister Santosh Lad, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, Skill Development Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar and SC/ST Welfare Minister B Nagendra will be part of the team.

The CM asked the team to hold the event as promised in the manifesto as well as discuss with industries about devising long-term strategies to plug the skills gap in job aspirants. The CM also wants the team to explore employment opportunities for aspirants in overseas markets also.

Siddaramaiah asked the team to work on a policy on employment to improve the opportunities for the youth.

The government, on Dec 26, opened enrolments for degree and diploma holders under the Yuva Nidhi scheme to claim a monthly stipend for up to two years. The government said the youth, who passed out this year, but have not got a job for six months, are entitled to the allowance. The scheme was announced by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the election campaign. Only graduates of the 2023 batch will get Rs 3,000 per month for two years, whereas diploma holders of the batch will get Rs 1,500 per month. The scheme applies to third genders as well. The Congress government is speeding up on its promises on jobs fair and unemployment allowances, probably seeking to make jobs a central theme of the election campaign in Karnataka with the Lok Sabha polls months away.

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data for July 2022 to June 2023, however, indicates a declining trend, over the years, for unemployment rate in the country in both rural and urban areas.

  • Amit Shah Instagram: Home Minister Amit Shah’s Instagram account crosses 1 crore followers

Union Minister of Home and Cooperation Amit Shah’s Instagram account has crossed the 1 crore mark in the number of followers.

Social media pundits suggest that the latest buzz around his dexterity in steering seven historic bills across both houses amidst an explosive furore created by the opposition has much to do with his soaring popularity on social media platforms.

As per the latest numbers, the Union Home Minister has as many as 34.1 million followers on X, 10.7 million on Instagram and 15 million on Facebook. However, Amit Shah has been the most followed political personality in India second only to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for a while now.The Home Minister’s 10.7 million followers on the short video platform Instagram is only second to PM Narendra Modi who is followed by a mind-boggling 82.7 million Insta people.

On Facebook, Amit Shah scored 15 million followers right after PM Narendra Modi who leads him with 48 million followers.

There is also a wide gap between Home Minister Amit Shah’s social media following and those of opposition stalwarts like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Congress President Rahul Gandhi.Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge who was recently named as the probable Prime Ministerial candidate of the INDI alliance trails far behind Amit Shah on social media dominance with a following of 566.7 K on X and 130K on Facebook as opposed to Shah’s 34.1 and 15 million respectively.Arvind Kejriwal, one of the most vocal opposition leaders and the Delhi Chief Minister finishes the race at 27.3 million on X, 1.7 million on Instagram and 9.2 million on Facebook.

While Rahul Gandhi clocks 24.7 million followers on X, 5.1 million on Instagram and 6.8 million on Facebook.

Although Shah’s popularity has constantly been on the rise since he was credited with having master-minded PM Narendra Modi’s landslide victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha Polls, it saw a massive upheaval after the BJP won an even bigger victory in 2019 under his presidency.

Placing a slew of landmark bills, overpowering the opposition with razor-sharp arguments often leaving the house in splits with witty comebacks, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has fomented an image of Parliamentarian par excellence in the last five years. (ANI)

  • INDIA bloc: TMC will lead charge in Bengal, India Bloc nationally: Mamata Banerjee

Setting the tone for 2024 Lok Sabha polls, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said INDIA bloc will taken on the BJP-led NDA in the country while Trinamool Congress will fight on its own in Bengal. Banerjee kicked off the campaign for Lok Sabha polls through a worker’s meet and a public rally at Chakla in North 24 Parganas district.

Banerjee’s statement on Thursday made clear that there are remote chances of any alliance or seat-sharing with Congress or Left Front in the state.

Banerjee also hit out at the BJP on CAA, saying, “the citizenship card is a ploy ahead of every Lok Sabha polls in a bid to woo the votes of the Matua community.”AITC took to its X handle and said, “@BJP4India’s yearly revival of the CAA issue is merely a ploy to manipulate people and garner votes. They’ve repeatedly misled the Matua community with false promises of citizenship. Had the Matuas not been legitimate citizens, how would they possess Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, ration cards, and receive the benefits of government schemes and services?”

Wooing the Matua community in Chakla, Banerjee spoke about the developmental works done for the community in the Matua-dominated North 24 Parganas district.

“Who did the developmental work for the Matua Thakurbari? We did it and have built colleges and universities… But ahead of elections, they (BJP) visit the Matua Thakurbari and ask for votes, making tall claims,” the West Bengal CM questioned. While talking about the CAA, Banerjee reminded people that all are the citizens of this country. “If you are not a citizen of this country, how are you receiving free ration, Swasthya Sathi, Pan Card, Aadhaar Card? Previously, the citizenship card was the responsibility of the District Magistrates, but the same has been taken away…They want to divide people,” Banerjee asserted.”The Matuas, who came to Bengal from Bangladesh till 1971, live in colonies and we are giving pattas to all those colonies under the name “Chirosthaayi Thikana” to ensure that they don’t have to live like refugees,” Banerjee said.

  • AAP leader Sanjay Singh: PM Modi’s degree: Court issues production warrant against AAP leader Sanjay Singh

A metropolitan court in Ahmedabad on Thursday issued a production warrant against jailed AAP leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh in a defamation case over his remarks regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational degree. The court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate SJ Panchal issued the production warrant against Singh after his lawyer informed the court that he had not received any instruction from his client because the Aam Aadmi Party leader is behind bars in Delhi’s Tihar jail.

Singh was arrested on October 5 in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise scam in Delhi.

Through the production warrant, the magistrate directed the local police to take custody of Singh from Tihar jail and produce him before the court at 11 am on January 11 when the court will take up further hearing in the case. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Singh are accused of tarnishing Gujarat University’s (GU) image through their “sarcastic” and “derogatory” statements in connection with PM Modi’s degree.

When the court on Thursday initiated examination of witnesses, Kejriwal’s lawyer submitted an exemption plea from appearance. The court accepted the plea.

When Singh’s lawyer informed the court that he had not received any instructions from Singh because the AAP leader was behind bars, GU’s lawyer Amit Nair took a strong objection saying it was a tactic by the AAP leader to further delay the matter. He then urged magistrate Panchal to issue a production warrant against Singh. The court accepted Nair’s plea and issued a warrant. The court had summoned the two leaders in the past after observing that prima facie there appeared to be a case against them under section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

GU registrar Piyush Patel had filed a defamation case against the two leaders over their comments after the Gujarat HC set aside the Chief Information Commissioner’s order on PM Modi’s degree.

They made “defamatory” statements in press conferences and on their Twitter, now X, handles targeting the university over Modi’s degree, the complainant stated.

He said that the AAP leaders’ comments targeting GU were defamatory and hurt the prestige of the university which has established its name among the public.

  • If EVMs not ‘fixed’ before Lok Sabha polls, BJP can win over 400 seats: Sam Pitroda

NEW DELHI: Raising concerns over electronic voting machines, Congress leader Sam Pitroda on Thursday said the BJP can win more than 400 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections if issues associated with EVMs are not “fixed”. The elections will be about deciding the destiny of India, he told PTI-Video in an interview.

While the Election Commission has always dismissed apprehensions over EVMs and also held hackathons to clear any doubts, some opposition leaders, including from the Congress, have been repeatedly raising the issue of EVMs allegedly being open to manipulation.

Many in the Congress have also asserted, including after the recent assembly polls in which the party lost some key heartland states, that they trust these machines. However, the Congress and other opposition parties have been demanding 100 per cent Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and that the slips should be given to voters rather than falling into boxes. Congress leader Pitroda also said that his recent comments on the Ram temple in Ayodhya were “twisted” and asserted that religion is a personal matter and should not be mixed with politics.

He was quoted in reports as saying it bothers him that the entire nation is hung up on the Ram temple.

On Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming Manipur-to-Mumbai Bharat Nyay Yatra ahead of the polls, Pitroda said, “The next election is about the future of India. What kind of nation we want to build.” “Do you want to build a nation articulated in our Constitution which respects all religions, autonomy of our institutions, which allows our civil society to function, or you want to build the nation based on one religion dominating?” he asked. Expressing concern over electronic voting machines (EVMs), Pitroda cited a report by NGO ‘The Citizens’ Commission on Elections’, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur, and said that the main recommendations of the report were to modify the current design of the VVPAT system to make it truly “voter-verified”.

“I waited for the Election Commission to respond but when it didn’t happen I decided to speak. It has nothing to do with the fact that elections in five states are over and the 2024 election is coming,” Pitroda said.

“I feel there is a trust deficit based on this report. And, the Election Commission must respond to rebuild the trust,” he said.

The Congress leader said he believes that democracy is derailed and “we are becoming too authoritarian”. “It’s all about one-man show,” he said.

Asked about the BJP’s claim that it would win more than 400 seats in the general elections, he said,” More power to them if they think they can do it. Great. That is for the country to decide. EVM needs to be fixed before the next election. If EVM is not fixed, 400 may be true. If EVM is fixed 400 may not be true.”

On his comments about the Ram temple, Pitroda said, “My comments on the Ram mandir got twisted. I am basically protecting the Constitution. I am saying that religion is a very personal matter, leave it to the people. Of course you celebrate, people should celebrate what they want to. But don’t complicate with politics.”

Asked about opposition INDIA bloc, of which the Congress is also a part, not picking Rahul Gandhi as its prime ministerial face, Pitroda said, “The INDIA alliance is not projecting anybody for the PM post.”

The alliance has collectively decided that “we get to that after the election because right now the priority is to mobilise 60 per cent of the people who don’t vote for the BJP”, he said and added that the members of the bloc will decide as a group who should be the prime ministerial candidate.

“Collectively, the group decided that it will not project anybody as its PM candidate. Those are two out of how many who pitched (Congress president Mallikarjun) Kharge’s name. In a coalition like that there are bound to be some differences. That’s the beauty of a coalition,” Pitroda said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is the TMC supremo, and her Delhi counterpart and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal had pitched Kharge’s name as the bloc’s prime ministerial face at its meeting in Delhi on December 19.

On the opposition face against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pitroda said, “I don’t think that’s the right question to be asked. It is not a presidential election, it is a parliamentary election.”

  • Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh: WFI not suspended, activities stopped to spread confusion: Priyanka Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the Centre on Monday of spreading “false news” about dissolving the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and alleged that its activities have been stopped to spread confusion and shelter a BJP MP who has been accused of sexual harassment by female wrestlers. She also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) always protects the accused with all its might and tortures the victims whenever incidents of atrocities on women come to light.

“The BJP is spreading false news about dissolving the wrestling federation. The federation has not been dissolved, its activities have been stopped so that the accused can be saved by spreading confusion. Do they have to stoop to this level to suppress the voice of aggrieved women?” the Congress general secretary asked in a post in Hindi on X.

“The well-known players who made the country proud accused a BJP MP of sexual harassment and the government stood with the accused. The victims were tortured and the accused was rewarded,” she said, adding that even the prime minister and the home minister did not pay attention to the issue. “The home minister forgot the assurance given to the women wrestlers in return for withdrawing the agitation,” Gandhi said. — priyankagandhi (@priyankagandhi) She said it is the “height of arrogance” that the accused BJP MP, former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, ensured that the next national-level competitions will be played in his own district, on his own college ground. “Defeated by this darkness and injustice, Olympic medal-winner Sakshi Malik quit wrestling and when players started returning their awards, the government is spreading rumours,” Gandhi alleged. “Wherever there are atrocities on a woman, this government with all the might of its power protects the accused and tortures the victims. We talk about women leadership in every field, but the people in power are busy harassing, suppressing and discouraging the women who are moving forward. “The people of the country, the women of the country are watching all this,” she said on the microblogging platform.

The WFI election was held on December 21, with Sanjay Singh, a loyalist of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, and his panel winning the polls by big margins.

The sports ministry, however, suspended the WFI till further notice on Sunday, after the wrestling body made a “hasty announcement” of organising the under-15 and under-20 national competitions “without following due procedure and not giving sufficient notice to wrestlers” for preparations.

The ministry also said the new body was working under the “complete control of former (WFI) office-bearers”, which was not in conformity with the National Sports Code.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh later said he has “taken retirement” from wrestling politics and the newly-elected body will take charge as he has many more responsibilities to look after, including next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

Several top wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Malik and Bajrang Punia and World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat, have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the MP from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh, and the case is being heard by the Delhi High Court. The former WFI chief has denied the allegations against him and claimed that he is being targeted under a conspiracy hatched by Congress leaders.

Malik announced her retirement from wrestling at a press conference in Delhi on Thursday, in protest against Sanjay Singh’s election as the WFI chief.

  • All schemes of previous govt will continue: Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Monday said none of the welfare schemes launched by the previous Congress government in the state will be discontinued. He was speaking at a function organised by the BJP to mark Good Governance Day on the birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Reacting to the allegations by the Congress that his government would discontinue the public welfare schemes launched by the previous government, Sharma said, “Congress people are saying our work, our schemes… I want to tell you that we will not stop any of the schemes”.

The chief minister said free medicines will continue to be made available at the government hospitals and the number of essential drugs would also be increased. Vajyapee made schemes for the welfare of the poor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the initiative forward, Sharma said.

BJP stalwart Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924, and died on August 16, 2018.

Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari and other leaders of the party also paid tributes to Vajpayee on his birth anniversary. The CM also conducted a surprise visit to the state-run Sawai Man Singh Hospital and instructed officials to improve the condition of the facility.

  • Over 70,000 killed due to Congress’ wrong policies on terrorism: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today claimed that over 70,000 people have been killed in India due to terrorism on account of Congress government’s wrong policies.

Shah was speaking in Rajya Sabha.

Replying to debate in Rajya Sabha on bills that seek to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and Indian Evidence Act, Shah said the definition of terrorism has been included in the new bills. The House earlier took up discussion on the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023. The three bills were passed by Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Amit Shah said in his reply that for the first time, changes have been made in the three laws governing the nearly 150-year-old criminal justice system.

He said that after the three new laws are implemented, India’s criminal justice system will take maximum advantage of technology.”If there will be maximum contribution of technology in any system, it will be in the Indian system…The aim of the three bills is not provide punishment but give justice,” he said.He said that in old laws, instead of crimes against women, priority was given to the protection of the Treasury and the British Crown.

Shah said the government has removed the section of sedition and replaced sedition with treason.

“The implementation of new criminal laws will ensure an end to ‘tareekh pe tareekh’ era and justice will be given in three years,” he said.

The minister said the bills have been framed after extensive deliberations since 2019 and these were also sent to the standing committee.
