  • Cannes Film Festival kicks off Tuesday with Johnny Depp’s ‘Jeanne du Barry’

    By Associated Press

FRANCE: The Cannes red carpet springs to life again on Tuesday as the 76th Cannes Film Festival gets underway with the premiere of the Louis XV period drama “Jeanne du Barry” with Johnny Depp.

This year’s festival promises a Cote d’Azur buffet of spectacle, scandal and cinema set to be served over the next 12 days.

It’s unspooling against the backdrop of labour unrest.

Protests that have roiled France in recent months over changes to its pension system are planned to run during the festival, albeit at a distance from the festival’s main hub.

Meanwhile, an ongoing strike by screenwriters in Hollywood could have unpredictable effects on the French Riviera festival.

But with a festival lined with some much-anticipated big-budget films, including James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny” and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”, the party is sure to go on, regardless.

Stars set to hit Cannes’ red carpet in the next week and a half include Natalie Portman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Sean Penn, Alicia Vikander, the Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) and Scarlett Johansson.

The festivities on Tuesday will include an opening ceremony where Michael Douglas is to receive an honorary Palme d’Or.

(Later, one will also be dished out to “Indiana Jones” star Harrison Ford).

The jury that will decide the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, will also be introduced.

This year, the jury is led by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund, a two-time Palme winner who last year won for the social satire “The Triangle of Sadness”.

The rest of the jury includes Brie Larson, Paul Dano, French director Julia Ducournau, Argentine filmmaker Damián Szifron, Afghan director Atiq Rahimi, French actor Denis Ménochet, Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Tourzani and Zambian-Welsh director Rungano Nyoni.

The opening night selection has attracted some controversy.

“Jeanne du Barry”, directed by and co-starring the French actor-director Maïwenn, co-stars Depp as Louis XV.

It’s Depp’s first new film since his trial last year with Amber Heard, his ex-wife.

After both Depp and Heard accused each other of physical and verbal abuse, a civil jury awarded Depp USD 10 million in damages and USD 2 million to Heard.

In remarks to the press on Monday, Cannes director Thierry Fremaux defended the choice, saying Depp is extraordinary in the film and he paid no attention to the trial.

“To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule, it’s the freedom of thinking, the freedom of speech and the freedom to act within a legal framework,” said Fremaux.

“If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a film, or the film was banned we wouldn’t be here talking about it.”

  • Cannes director defends festival after Adele Haenel slams French film industry’s #MeToo response

    By Associated Press

FRANCE: After one of France’s top actors, Adele Haenel, announced she was quitting the French film industry that she denounced for “complacency toward sexual aggressors,” Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux rejected her criticisms while addressing members of the media Monday.

Haenel, star of the 2019 Cannes entry “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” last week published an open letter in the Telerama magazine in which the 34-year-old said Cannes and other pillars of the French film industry are “ready to do anything to defend their rapist chiefs.

” Fremaux strongly disagreed while speaking to journalists before the festival kicks off Tuesday with the premiere of Maiwenn’s historical drama “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp.

“No doubt for somewhat radical reasons, she had to make this comment about Cannes, which was obviously false,” said Fremaux.

In 2019, Haenel accused French director Christophe Ruggia of sexually harassing her for years beginning at 12.

Ruggia has denied it. Since then, Haenel has often vocally protested what she’s called an insufficient response to sexual abuse in French filmmaking.

At the Cesar Awards 2020, she walked out of the ceremony after Roman Polanski won best director.

In his remarks, Fremaux only specifically addressed Haenel’s criticism of Cannes.

When she came to the festival with Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” he said: “She didn’t think that when she came to Cannes unless she suffered from a crazy dissonance.

“The proof is that if you believed it, you would not be here, listening to me now, taking your accreditation and complaining about the press screenings for a festival of rapists,” Fremaux said to the gathered reporters.

How the #MeToo movement has reverberated in Cannes, one of the world’s oldest and most glamorous film festivals, has been a subject of debate.

Harvey Weinstein was for years a prominent presence at Cannes, and some of the incidents of sexual abuse allegations against the producer took place during the festival.

Cannes also has traditionally had a low rate of female filmmakers in its prestigious competition line-up, where only two female directors have won the Palme d’Or: Jane Campion in 1993 with “The Piano” and Julia Ducournau in 2021 with “Titane.”

In 2018, 82 women led a protest on the Cannes red carpet.

The following year, Fremaux bowing to pressure, signed a pledge promising to strive toward greater gender parity. Fremaux acknowledged that the festival once had a problem with gender inclusivity.

“Maybe I was clumsy,” he said.

This year, there are a record seven films directed by women out of the 21 movies in competition, which he said reflects the growing prominence of female filmmakers around the world.

Now, he added, “When we hesitate between a film made by a man or a woman, we’ll select the film made by the woman. But only when we hesitate. This all denotes progress,” said Fremaux.

At the same time, Cannes has sometimes been accused of being too welcoming to some of the men who have been accused of misconduct.

Polanski returned to the festival in 2017.

This year, some had been expecting Woody Allen’s latest film to premiere in Cannes but it didn’t make it to the line-up.

Asked about it, Fremaux said he would only address films in the selection.

Fremaux was, though, questioned about the selection of “Jeanne du Barry” as the opening night film.

The film, which co-stars Maiwenn, is Depp’s first since his high-profile trial with Amber Heard, his ex-wife.

  • Sam Asghari lashes out at documentary on Britney Spears’s troubled life

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Sam Asghari, husband of Britney Spears, has lashed out at the “disgusting” television special centred around his wife.

‘TMZ Investigates: Britney Spears: The Price Of Freedom’ will release “details about her deeply troubled marriage, family estrangement, alarming behaviour, failed intervention and how she continues to be an enduring force in the music industry”, reports Mirror.co.uk.

However, fitness trainer, Sam took offence to the upcoming special, as he explained in a clip shared to Instagram Stories as he wrote: “I found it absolutely disgusting for the people who were in her life when she didn’t have a voice, they went and told her story like it was theirs.”

Mirror.co.uk further states that the part-time actor also went on to reflect on the Circus songstress’ treatment while she was under conservatorship, which ended in November 2021 after thirteen years. During those years, her father, Jamie Spears, had free reign to take control of her personal and financial affairs.

“How are you going to take the most influential person of her generation, the Princess of Pop, America’s sweetheart, and put her in prison where her father (Jamie) tells her what to do, what water to drink, who to see and use her as a money-making machine?” the 29-year-old asked his social media followers.

  • Christopher McQuarrie on stunts in ‘Mission: Impossible 7 – Part One’

    By Express News Service

We had earlier reported that the latest instalment in the Tom Cruise-fronted Mission Impossible franchise, titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, will be the final assignment of Cruise’s Ethan Hunt.

In a recent interaction with Empire, director Christopher McQuarrie spoke about the stunts performed by Tom Cruise in the film. The filmmaker explained the challenges of wanting to stage the most outrageous action scenes but also figuring out how to film them in a logical way.

“The Mission films always have a huge stunt, a jaw-dropping moment of wonder. This one is no exception,” said Christopher. “In an epic set-piece, Cruise battles Esai Morale’s villain on top of a moving steam train, and this isn’t a steam train that belongs in a museum.

This is a fully powered, very fast, rocking, and rolling steam engine barreling down tracks. All the days on the train were exhausting. The train just sucks you dry but in a good way. We’re making a movie that involves sequences that they just don’t shoot practically anymore, and haven’t in a long, long time,” he added. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will hit screens on July 12.

  • ‘Will ensure toxicity is eradicated’: Kelly Clarkson on her talk show being a ‘toxic workplace’

    By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES: Kelly Clarkson has responded to a Rolling Stones report accusing her daytime talk show of being a toxic workplace.

Clarkson issued a statement on her Instagram page Saturday. She addressed the allegations after 11 current and former employees complained about being overworked and underpaid on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” and also called their work “traumatizing to their mental health” in the magazine’s Friday report.

In the report, the anonymous employees called Clarkson “fantastic” but said show producers were “monsters” who made their lives “hell.”

Clarkson said she loves her team.

“To find out that anyone is feeling unheard and or disrespected on this show is unacceptable,” she said in the post. The talk show host said she wants to maintain a healthy and safe work environment.

“As we prepare for a move to the East Coast, I am more committed than ever to ensuring that not only our team is moving, but also our new team in NY is comprised of the best and kindest in the business,” she said. “Part of that build will include leadership training for all of the senior staff, including myself.”

Clarkson said that there’s “always room to grow” and that she wants the show to be the “best version of ourselves in any business.”

“Especially when it comes to leadership, to ensure that any notion of toxicity is eradicated,” she said.

An NBCUniversal spokesperson said in a statement that the entertainment corporation is “committed to a safe and respectful work environment.” The statement read that workplace complaints are taken “very seriously and to insinuate otherwise is untrue.”

“When issues are reported they are promptly reviewed, investigated and acted upon as appropriate,” the statement said. “’The Kelly Clarkson Show’ strives to build a safe, respectful and equitable workplace that nurtures a culture of inclusivity and creativity.”

  • ‘Love Again’ Review: A predictable rom-com made entertaining by good comedy and Celine Dion

    Express News Service

When Rob (Sam Heughan) and Mira (a very convincing Priyanka Chopra) meet for the first time in Love Again, just like every other romantic film, there’s slow instrumental music playing in the background, and they’re standing in front of the grand opera wearing show-stopping garments.

There’s nothing new with Mira saying, “Hi, I’m Mira Ray,” and Rob introducing himself in return. When their eyes lock, we might be reminded of scores of other similar scenes in rom-com history. But the way the conversation ensues, a brilliant piece of music is used to underscore the emotions, and the convincing performances, show the intent of the makers was to make it one of the most romantic moments in recent rom-com history. There are also interesting subversions that make Love Again non-formulaic.

Take, for instance, the meet-cute scene once again, and immediately after they exchange greetings and part ways, the music abruptly stops as Mira bumps into a couple, and the audience erupted into laughter. Unexpected humour is the strength of Love Again, which is an equal parts romance and comedy, with a side order of engaging entertainment.

Love Again revolves around Mira, who loses her boyfriend John in an accident. Two years after the tragedy, she tries to get back into the dating game. Her method of catharsis is to text her late boyfriend’s number, making her feel like she’s still in touch with him. But, here’s the twist, the number is now owned by Rob, a despondent music critic, who has recently gotten his heart broken. How they meet and fall in love, forms the rest of the story.

Love Again does not take much time to set the scene. A brief conversation between John and Mira establishes how much they love each other, and almost immediately after, he meets with an accident, right in front of her eyes. All of this happens within the first four minutes. And yet, thanks to the well-written dialogue, it is proof enough to make us buy the grief she experiences throughout the film.

The best parts of the film are Celine Dion’s performance as herself, and Nick Jonas’ extended cameo. Post their wedding, Priyanka and Nick have only made one onscreen appearance in the Jonas Brothers’ Sucker song video. Although he appears in a brief role, the snooty and very compelling Nick, makes us want him to play a full-length lead opposite Priyanka. Manifestations are in the process…

Similarly, Celine Dion, the singer, plays a very important, and witty role as herself in Love Again. Rob’s struggle with romance post his heartbreak is brought to light by Celine. For example, in a scene, Celine says, “You obviously know nothing about it.” And as we along with Rob wonder ‘what’ he doesn’t know about, she replies, “Love.” His realisation of love also happens with Celine’s classic ‘All By Myself’ playing in the background. Her songs are used in several places to help elevate the romance part of the film.

While it is usual to find romantic cliches in a rom-com, some need definitely need to be avoided. One such is having Rob’s colleagues and best friends, Liza and Billy, be black and gay, respectively. This representation feels more tokenism than actual representation because these characters have nothing to do with the overall scheme of the narrative.

An element that is commonplace in most rom-coms is, the couple getting intimate immediately after they confess their liking for each other. I believe this would have been unconvincing in Love Again because they are beating several odds to be together. Thankfully, Mira and Rob do not get physical immediately and allow comfort with each other to come before anything else.

The makers throw in a scene where Mira unintentionally falls asleep to Rob’s voice to establish that she feels safe and trusts him. Commercial romcoms often miss out on exhibiting such emotions, which are salient to make romance relatable.

As the film takes too much time in establishing Mira’s grief, we don’t really know much about Rob. Yeah, we know Rob is a music critic, loves basketball, and is in love with Mira. Even Mira’s character traits, except for

the fact that she loves ‘Would You Rather’ questions, are not clear to us even by the end of the film. While Mira and Rob’s relationship does feel dreamy and utopian, the relatability factor goes for a toss. When Dion says, “I don’t really care if you and Rob get together,” it seems like she’s speaking our hearts.  If only, the makers focussed more on the lead characters, than on making this film a Celine Dion tribute (no complaints there, though), Love Again would have had the potential to become something more than just funny and entertaining.

With delightful yet cheesy comedy, and a realistic romance at the centre of it all, Love Again, an adaptation of Sofie Cramer’s German novel Text For You, is a worthy watch. There is a lot more novelty on offer in Love Again. It reminds us that our soulmates might just about be anywhere… You may bump into them, even when walking out of the theatres, with light instrumental music playing in the background.

    Take, for instance, the meet-cute scene once again, and immediately after they exchange greetings and part ways, the music abruptly stops as Mira bumps into a couple, and the audience erupted into laughter. Unexpected humour is the strength of Love Again, which is an equal parts romance and comedy, with a side order of engaging entertainment. googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8052921-2’); });

At this year’s festival, several Indian films will be screened including director Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Kennedy’ and actor Rahul Roy’s ‘Agra’.

Let’s talk about them in detail

    ‘Kennedy’

Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Kennedy’ has been selected as part of the Midnight Screenings section of the festival, which will take place from May 16-27.

In April, the official Twitter handle of the Cannes Film Festival announced the selection of Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Kennedy’ in the Midnight Screenings section of the festival.

“KENNEDY by Anurag KASHYAP #SeanceDeMinuit / #MidnightScreenings #Cannes2023,” read the post. ‘Kennedy’ stars Sunny Leone, Rahul Bhatt and Abhilash Thapliyal.

Coming from the house of Zee Studios and Good Bad Films, ‘Kennedy’ is essentially a police noir film, by Anurag Kashyap. The film revolves around an insomniac ex-cop, long thought to be dead, but still operating for the corrupt system, and looking for redemption. The film stars Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone in the lead roles and has been selected for a Midnight Screening at Cannes Film Festival 2023.

Sharing details about it, Kashyap said, “It’s a film and genre I always wanted to explore. It’s more polar than noir, inspired by the crime writing of Patrick Manchette and his comic book collaborations with Jacques Tardi, and the cinema of Melville. It’s also a deeply personal crime/police drama and am so grateful to Zee Studios, Shariq and team, Neeraj, Bhumika, my producers Ranjan, Kabir and Kavan, my whole team, my partners in crime Sylver, Kazvin, Prashant who helped me shape it. Rahul Bhat who gave 8 months of his life, Sunny Leone who took on the challenge of it, Mohit Takalkar for taking it on…am just grateful at the moment.”

    ‘Agra’

‘Agra’, starring Rahul Roy, will have its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival. Written and directed by Kanu Behl, the Hindi film is produced by Saregama India Ltd, UFO Production, and O28 Films.

‘Agra’ has an ensemble cast headlined by Aashiqui star Rahul Roy, who makes a comeback with this film. It also features Priyanka Bose (actor of the Oscar-nominated film Lion), debut actor Mohit Agarwal, Ruhani Sharma, and veteran actors Vibha Chibber, Sonal Jha, and Aanchal Goswami in pivotal roles.

The film is an exploration of sexual dynamics within a family and the deep dystopian fractures created in modern India that are fast shrinking into pigeon-holed spaces.

    ‘Ishanou’

Manipuri filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma’s award-winning film of 1990 ‘Ishanou’ will be screened at Cannes this year.

It has been officially selected for a red-carpet world premiere on May 19, 2023 at the prestigious Cannes Classic section of the Cannes Film Festival 2023. This restored film becomes the only Indian film to be considered under the Classic Section of the Cannes Film Festival this year, a segment that celebrates restored versions of all-time classics.
