“With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday.

So many words can describe him, so many stories can be told, but at this time we’re too overwhelmed to put them into words.

  • ‘I Want to Play Unruly Women’: Actor Rachel Weisz

    Express News Service

Many will know Dead Ringers for the terrifying 1988 David Cronenberg movie. What can you tell us about this version?

I’m huge a fan of the original film. I remember seeing it years ago, and it has haunted me ever since. That’s really how the idea to turn the story into a television show about sisters rather than brothers came about. I loved the idea of playing two roles, and to perhaps bring the story to a new audience as well as others who, like me, loved the original. It’s a really fascinating psycho-sexual twisted thriller, with an element of dark humour to it.

A poster of  Dead RingersTell us about the two characters you play. How did you approach your double role?

I play sisters Elliot and Beverly Mantle. They are both obstetrician-gynecologists in Manhattan, and are the best at what they do. They are, however, very different from each other. While Elliot is more interested in science and pushing the boundaries of medical ethics, Beverly wants to open a birthing centre.

Personality wise, Elliot is wild, mischievous and ethically a bit dubious. Beverly, on the other hand, is more thoughtful. The writer, Alice Birch, and I spent a lot of time talking about the two sisters as individual characters. That was how I approached playing them as well, which wasn’t too hard because they were psychologically so well defined and layered from the very start.

Which one of the sisters did you enjoy playing more?

Both. They are beautifully written and so complicated.

How did it work in scenes where both sisters are in the frame?

We definitely did not shoot the scenes with me as Beverly one day and then Elliot the next. That would have been easier for me. It worked with us doing it all at once, and having to do everything twice, which, of course, meant everything taking twice as long. It was complicated, especially if both sisters were speaking to each other, which they are for majority of the show. It was challenging, but you get used to it.

How long did it take for you to go through hair and makeup from playing one sister to the other?

It took a little while at the beginning, but like anything else, the more we did it, the quicker it got. After a couple of weeks of filming, we had it down to about 15 minutes, which is pretty quick for hair, makeup and to costume change.

It was really a team effort. After that, it was all about the technical things such as making sure I had the right eyeline to be looking at the other sister, and to make sure we reset the scene each time.

How do you go about choosing your projects at this stage of your career?

It’s exactly how I have always done things. For me, it’s not about the genre, but the character. It’s about finding complicated, difficult, unruly women with appetite. Those are the characters I want to play.

Besides playing the two sisters, you were also involved behind the camera in Dead Ringers. Tell us about that.

I’m an executive producer on the show and I was involved with the development of the script, which is something I enjoy. I was in the writer’s room for six weeks, and then I participated in pre-production, as well as the choosing of directors. But when it came to filming, I was just an actor playing two roles. That was enough.

What is it about producing that you enjoy?

I like optioning material, discovering novels or memoirs and finding writers to adapt them. Working with writers is what I love the most about producing.

Finally, why should people watch Dead Ringers?

Because it’s deliciously mischievous, emotional, and darkly humorous. It’s a wild ride.

  • Hollywood actor Drew Barrymore admits she tried ending her life twice

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Drew Barrymore got candid about going through her darkest time. When discussing suicidal thoughts with Madison Beer on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’, she said that she tried to end her life twice.

The 48-year-old made the honest confession after her guest shared her own story.

The singer first explained: “I feel like I was sort of putting on this facade and living this role I had been assigned for so long and it all caught up to me one day and then one day turned into weeks and months and, honestly, I feel like it was at least year that I was always in this sort of, like, suicidal ideation mindset.”

“It felt very normal to me to think about that at the end of every day, and then that wasn’t until I ended up actually making an attempt,” Madison further noted. “It was, thankfully, obviously unsuccessful.”

“I don’t know, it just all became too much. I wasn’t successful and I want to do something with that,” the 24-year-old continued. “I want to be able to say I made the choice to live and, what am I gonna do now? What does that mean?”

Barrymore later stated that she could relate to Madison because she also attempted to “end her life twice.”

She said: “Everybody struggles, so I related on levels that are difficult to talk about and I want to thank you because you’re discussing stuff right now that I want to make you feel safe about because I’ve been there.”

Drew, who made her acting debut at the age of five in 1980’s ‘Altered States’, has been open about her struggle with mental health. She was 13 when her mother admitted her to the Van Nuys Psychiatric Hospital near Los Angeles, California, for an 18-month stay.

“I was a real wild child and I just got so out of control that no one knew what to do with me,” Drew recalled when revisiting the facility in 2021. “They drove me here in the middle of the night and they walked me through those two doors and when you go through those two doors you do not come out.”

  • Bond actress Eva Green wins UK court case over acting fee of $1 million

    By AFP

LONDON: James Bond star Eva Green on Friday won a court case in the UK over her $1 million (£810,000) acting fee for the never-made science fiction film “A Patriot”.

The French actress had sued UK-based production company White Lantern Film at the High Court in London for the fee but the firm countersued, saying she derailed the £4 million project by making “unreasonable demands”.

Judge Michael Green ruled the 42-year-old actress was entitled to the sum and dismissed the counter-claim.

“In particular, I find that Ms Green did not renounce her obligations under the artist agreement; nor did she commit any repudiatory breaches of it,” the judge said.

Green, famous for her role as Vesper Lynd in 2006 Bond film “Casino Royale”, was due to play a soldier.

She signed up to the project in 2018, but became increasingly uneasy as funding issues meant that UK producer Jake Seal began to assume more control.

The star attended a trial in January, where messages between her and production staff were read out.

At one point, she blamed her “Frenchness” for calling a film director “weak and stupid” and accusing him of making a cheap “B shitty movie”.

Max Mallin, lawyer for White Lantern, said Green had shown a “categorical and unequivocal refusal to perform” and repeatedly made “unreasonable demands”.

“I don’t care about the money. I live to make good films. It’s my religion,” Green had told the court.

Green was also angry that production was shifting from Ireland to Black Hangar studios in southern England.

“I need my team around me so that I can handle anything evil Jake (Seal) throws at me”, she messaged her agent.

“My team will have to pull out and I will be obliged to take his shitty peasant crew members” from nearby Hampshire, she added.

Green claims that she was not given enough training for the role and accused the producers of “cutting corners”.

“Look at what happened with Alec Baldwin on the movie ‘Rust’,” she told the court.

“Producers cutting corners, no safety measures in place, and a young woman got killed.”

James McAvoy is all set to lead a high-concept action thriller, titled Control, helmed by Robert Schwentke. The film is backed by Studiocanal and The Picture Company. The shooting for Control is set to begin in Berlin in Summer.

Adapted from the award-winning podcast Shipworm from Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, Control will be a tense edge-of-the-seat thriller that features a doctor who wakes up one morning with an untraceable device planted in his head. He is forced to follow a mysterious voice’s instructions to avoid devastating consequences.

With the latest revision by Andrew Baldwin, the script for Control was penned by Akers. The Picture Company’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce under Studiocanal.

James McAvoy is known for his performance in a few films of the X-Men series, The Last King of Scotland, and Atonement. He will next be seen in The Book of Clarence alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and LaKeith Stanfield. He recently signed Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil remake.
