  • ‘Serious Issue…’: US Calls For Accountablity In Alleged Murder Plot Of Khalistani Terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun |

New Deljhi: In a recent development that has strained diplomatic relations between the United States and India, a high-ranking US diplomat has labeled the alleged assassination attempt on Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani terrorist, as a “serious issue” for both nations. Donald Lu, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, emphasized the gravity of the situation during a Congressional hearing focused on Pakistan’s election.

“This is a serious issue..We take it incredibly seriously, raised at the highest level with India. Encourage India to hold accountable those responsible”, Lu said.

Lu pointed out that the US Department of Justice has implicated an Indian citizen, allegedly acting under the direction of an Indian government official, in a plot to assassinate Pannun on American soil. The administration is taking this accusation very seriously, and the matter has been escalated to the highest levels of dialogue with India.

In response to this incident, India has established a committee to conduct a thorough investigation. Lu urged for a swift and transparent inquiry to ensure that justice prevails. The accused, Nikhil Gupta, is currently detained and faces charges of murder-for-hire.

The US Justice Department’s indictment alleges that an unnamed Indian government employee orchestrated the recruitment of Gupta to hire a hitman for the assassination, which was ultimately thwarted by US authorities. This case has brought to light the complex web of international relations and the challenges of ensuring accountability across borders.

Last December, Jon Finer, the US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor, acknowledged the steps taken by India to address the situation, including the formation of a Committee of Enquiry.

  • DMK Drops Senthil Kumar Who Made ‘Gaumutra States’ Remark |

DMK Dharmapuri MP, S Senthilkumar, who made the ‘gaumutra states’ remark in Parliament was among those who were not renominated by the party for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Senthil Kumar described himself as an “unconventional” politician while thanking friends on X who wondered why he was not given another chance by the party to contest the LS polls. There were also some critical comments in social media against him over remarks that became controversial in the past.

On X, the Dharmapuri MP said in a post: “Thank you Twitter friends for enormous support & unconditional love. What have I done to receive such bountiful unadulterated Love. I have done nothing spl, Other than being myself an -Unconventional politician. How am I going to repay this….” He posted a card with the word ‘love’ to his well-wishers.

He expressed satisfaction in working for the people of Dharmapuri Lok Sabha constituency for the past five years and for having brought several schemes to the region. Senthil Kumar conveyed his best wishes to A Mani, an advocate who has been named by the DMK as its candidate for the Dharmapuri LS seat.

On 5 December 2023, Senthil Kumar asked why the BJP could win polls only in the Hindi heartland states, “what we generally call as gaumutra (cow urine) states.” He had also said that “you (BJP) cannot come to south India,” while speaking on a debate on Bills related to Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP condemned it and Senthilkumar too apologised after DMK President MK Stalin reprimanded him.

Senthil Kumar, while taking part in a ceremony in 2022 for a local project had demanded to know why priests belonging to Christianity and Islam were not present and why Hindu rituals alone should be held at the event.

SR Parthiban (Salem), Dhanush M Kumar (Tenkasi), K Shanmuga Sundaram (Pollachi), Gautham Sigamani (Kallakurichi) and Palanimanickam (Thanjavur) were the five others who have not been renominated by the DMK.

The Madras HC had convicted Ponmudy in December last year in a disproportionate assets case. Ponmudy’s conviction was later suspended by the Supreme Court. A case related to Governor R N Ravi declining to appoint Ponmudy as a Minister, despite Chief Minister Stalin’s advice is pending in the apex court.

This comes after Elvish was named in the FIR filed in the case along with five others. Five of those alleged accused have since been arrested by the Police. • ‘Will Roll It Back If…’: Zomato Takes U-Turn On Green Uniform For Pure Veg Fleet Amid Row |

New Delhi: In response to the recent online criticism regarding the introduction of the “Pure Veg Mode” service, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal on Tuesday said that the food delivery platform will “roll it back in a heartbeat” if it leads to adverse societal impacts. In a detailed late-night post on X, Goyal addressed worries that Zomato’s regular delivery fleet might be denied entry by certain societies and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs).

“There’s an opinion that some societies and RWAs will now not let our regular fleet in. We will stay alert for any such cases and work with these RWAs to not let this happen. We understand our social responsibility due to this change, and we will not back down from solving it when the need arises,” he stated.

Update on our pure veg fleet —

While we are going to continue to have a fleet for vegetarians, we have decided to remove the on-ground segregation of this fleet on the ground using the colour green. All our riders — both our regular fleet, and our fleet for vegetarians, will…
    — Deepinder Goyal (@deepigoyal) March 20, 2024

    Clarification On “Pure Veg Mode”

Goyal clarified that the “Pure Veg Mode” or the “Pure Veg Fleet” does not cater to or exclude any religious or political preferences. He further explained the rationale behind the company’s decision to introduce the “Pure Veg Mode” service.

“But why did we need to separate the fleets? Because despite everyone’s best efforts, sometimes the food spills into the delivery boxes. In those cases, the smell of the previous order travels to the next order, and may lead to the next order smelling of the previous order. For this reason, we had to separate the fleet for veg orders,” Goyal explained.

    Emphasizing Dietary Preference

The Zomato CEO stressed that the new service caters strictly to a dietary preference, regardless of an individual’s religion or caste, and that the participation of delivery partners in the new fleet will not be determined by their dietary preferences.

“I would like to repeat that this feature strictly serves a dietary preference. And I know there are a lot of customers who would never order food from a restaurant which serves meat, irrespective of their religion/caste,” Goyal said.

Goyal concluded his post by assuring that Zomato will retract the Pure Veg Mode service if it results in significant negative societal repercussions. “I promise that if we observe any significant negative societal repercussions as a result of this change, we will retract it instantly,” Goyal affirmed.

Launch Of “Pure Veg Mode” Service

The co-founder of Zomato announced the launch of a “Pure Veg Mode” service on Tuesday to cater to customers who strictly follow a vegetarian diet. Goyal attributed the feedback from vegetarian customers as the driving force behind the launch and announced that the online food delivery platform is also introducing a “Pure Veg Fleet” in India for customers who adhere to a 100% vegetarian diet.

“India has the highest percentage of vegetarians in the world, and one of the most significant feedback we’ve received from them is their particular concern about how their food is cooked and handled,” Goyal said in a series of posts on X.

“To cater to their dietary preferences, we are launching a ‘Pure Veg Mode’ along with a ‘Pure Veg Fleet’ on Zomato today, for customers who have a 100% vegetarian dietary preference,” he added.

For the ‘Pure Veg Mode’, the company will collaborate with select restaurants that serve exclusively vegetarian food, excluding any establishments that offer non-vegetarian items. The Pure Veg Fleet will use green delivery boxes instead of the standard red ones.

Goyal stated that these delivery personnel will exclusively deliver orders from pure vegetarian restaurants and will not handle any non-vegetarian meals. Furthermore, they will not enter non-vegetarian restaurants while carrying the green delivery box.

“Our dedicated Pure Veg Fleet will only serve orders from these pure veg restaurants. This means that a non-veg meal, or even a veg meal served by a non-veg restaurant will never go inside the green delivery box meant for our Pure Veg Fleet,” he concluded.

  • Election Facts: This Indian State Had Its Own Prime Minister Even After Independence |

NEW DELHI: As the nation gears up for the impending Lok Sabha and assembly elections, a fascinating journey through India’s political landscape beckons us to revisit a time when the subcontinent was fragmented into 565 princely states before liberating itself from British colonial rule. These indigenous realms, staunch advocates of sovereign governance, posed a significant challenge to the vision of a unified India. Amidst the mosaic of territories comprising ‘Territories of British India,’ ‘Princely states,’ and colonial outposts of France and Portugal, the post-independence era witnessed a remarkable transition.

Following India’s independence, a vast majority of 562 princely states pledged allegiance to the Indian Confederation, with notable exceptions like Hyderabad, Junagadh, Bhopal, and Kashmir.

The post-independence period witnessed a fluidity in the boundaries of Indian states. From the initial count of 565 princely states and 17 provinces before partition, the landscape morphed into 14 states and 6 Union Territories post the 1956 Reorganisation of States. Subsequently, this number burgeoned to 29 states and 7 union territories by 2014, culminating in the bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir, leading to 28 states and 9 Union Territories.

Of significant historical note is the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir, which retained its own Prime Minister and Sadr-e-Riyasat (Head of State) until 1965. The amendment to the J&K Constitution in 1965, under the Sixth Constitution of the J&K Amendment Act, marked a pivotal moment. The positions of Prime Minister and Sadr-e-Riyasat were supplanted by the Chief Minister and Governor, respectively, by the Congress government of the time.

Jammu & Kashmir’s political saga unfolds with a cast of notable figures. Sir Albion Banerjee, appointed by Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh, served as the first Prime Minister. His tenure was succeeded by a succession of leaders, including Mehr Chand Mahajan and Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, who transitioned from Head of the Administration to Prime Minister.

However, the political landscape of J&K witnessed tumultuous shifts, epitomized by the arrest of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s directives. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad succeeded him, followed by Khwaja Shamsuddin and Congress leader Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq. It was during Sadiq’s tenure that the Central government orchestrated the transformation, marking the dawn of a new era with Sadiq assuming the mantle of the first Chief Minister.

The constitutional evolution of J&K saw the emergence of the Sadr-e-Riyasat, a position imbued with significant electoral significance. However, subsequent amendments and political negotiations led to its eventual demise, with Karan Singh serving as the sole Sadr-e-Riyasat until its abolition in 1965, concurrently becoming the inaugural Governor.

The intricacies of Jammu & Kashmir’s constitutional journey have been the subject of legal and political discourse. The Sixth Amendment to the J&K Constitution ushered in substantial structural changes, delineating the roles of Sadr-e-Riyasat and the Governor, albeit amidst contentious debates.

In 1975, a Presidential Order, issued under Article 370, restricted the J&K Legislature from altering the constitutional provisions regarding the appointment and powers of the Governor.

In a landmark ruling in December 2015, the J&K High Court deemed the conversion of Sadr-e-Riyasat into Governor unconstitutional, underscoring the significance of ‘elective’ status in preserving the state’s constitutional autonomy.

The clamour for reinstating J&K’s autonomy to its original 1953 position reverberates through its major political parties, notably the National Conference, spearheaded by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. However, attempts at restoration have been met with political resistance, underscoring the complexities entrenched within the region’s constitutional narrative.

  • Supreme Court To Hear Muslim League’s Plea Demanding Stay On CAA Rules Today |

The Supreme Court is set to review several pleas on Tuesday requesting the government to suspend the enforcement of the 2024 Citizenship Amendment Rules. The stay is demanded until the court has resolved the challenges to the constitutionality of the 2019 Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The bench announced its intention to schedule all applications requesting a suspension of the Rules for a hearing on Tuesday. Additionally, the highest court mentioned that the entire set of 237 petitions will be included in the list alongside the most recent applications.

The early hearing was warranted after Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) argued that once migrant Hindus are granted Indian citizenship, it cannot be revoked, thus suggesting the need for an expedited hearing. A panel consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra have acknowledged the arguments by Sibal.

Apart from IUML, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Debabrata Saika, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Abdul Khaleque, a Congress MP from Assam, and various others have also submitted applications requesting a suspension of the Rules.

‘Muslim Community Deprived Of CAA Benefits’

One day after the government released the regulations under the CAA, the Kerala-based political party IUML filed a petition in the Supreme Court, requesting a stay to the enforcement of these regulations. The IUML urged for a suspension of the contested law and regulations, arguing that no punitive measures should be taken against members of the Muslim community who have been excluded from the benefits of this legislation, reported ANI.

PK Kunhalikutty, a leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), expressed solidarity with the Kerala government’s stance of abstaining from enforcing CAA. “Why should they implement a law that has not been welcomed by anyone in India? What is the need? Why are they taking a partisan stand in the matter of citizenship? ” Kunhalikutty told agency.

    Kerala Government’s Plea Against CAA

On March 11, following the Union Home Ministry’s notification of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asserted that Kerala would not enforce the Act. Vijayan stated, “The LDF government approached the Supreme Court to confirm that Kerala would not implement the Citizenship Amendment Act. Kerala is the first state to move a plea against CAA in the Supreme Court. The state will initiate further legal action soon.”

    Mandate Under CAA 2019

The regulations of the CAA, brought by the Central government and ratified by Parliament in 2019, is designed to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted migrants belonging to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians community who fled from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and entered India prior to December 31, 2014.
