  • SC Verdict Today On Pleas Seeking 100% EVM-VVPAT Vote Verification |

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to declare its verdict on Wednesday regarding several petitions requesting complete cross-verification of votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) using the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). The VVPAT serves as an autonomous method for voters to verify if their votes have been accurately recorded. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta will pronounce the specific instructions on the plea in which order was reserved by the apex court on April 18.

During the hearing the top court pointed out the importance of voter’s trust in the electoral system and their satisfaction. The SC told petitioners seeking direction to go back to using ballot papers, not to suspect the efficacy of EVMs and appreciate if the Election Commission does good work.

During the nearly two-day hearing, the bench discussed with senior Deputy Election Commissioner Nitesh Kumar Vyas for about an hour to grasp the operation of EVMs. Senior advocate Maninder Singh, representing the Election Commission, asserted that EVMs are standalone devices invulnerable to tampering, although he acknowledged the potential for human error.

On April 16, the SC depreciated the criticism of EVMs and calls for going back to ballot papers, saying the electoral process in India is a “humongous task” and attempts should not be made to “bring down the system”, reported PTI.

The NGO ‘Association for Democratic Reforms’ (ADR) sought the court to change a decision made by the election commission in 2017. This decision was about replacing see-through glass on voting machines with opaque glass. With the new glass, a voter can only see their vote slip when a light is on for seven seconds.

The ADR has requested that the number of votes recorded by EVMs matches the votes that have been reliably recorded as cast. They also want to ensure that voters can confirm through the VVPAT slip that their vote, as seen on the paper slip, has been counted as recorded.

At present, VVPAT slips from five randomly chosen EVMs in each Assembly segment undergo verification.

  • India To Have Revolutionary New Shoe Sizing System: ‘Bha’ To Replace Traditional EU/UK/US Sizes |

NEW DELHI: For several decades, Indians have struggled with ill-fitting shoes, having no choice but to live with utter discomfort due to foreign-based shoe sizing standards. But now, Indians will soon have their own shoe sizing system called ‘Bha’.

    What Is ‘Bha’?

‘Bha,’ a brainchild of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI). Named after ‘Bharat,’ it’s designed to cater specifically to the Indian feet. Instead of the current confusing array of foreign show sizes, ‘Bha’ offers eight clear options, taking into account age and gender differences.

Factors Behind The New Shoe Sizing System

It is important to note that a nationwide survey was conducted between December 2021 and March 2022 utilising advanced 3D foot scanning technology, which analyzed over one lakh Indian feet across diverse locations. The massive survey covering 1,01,880 people in 79 locations across five geographical zones discovered that the average Indian woman’s foot size reaches its highest point at around 11 years of age, while for Indian men, it peaks at about 15 or 16 years old.

The survey also found a significant discrepancy between Indian foot morphology and the existing shoe sizing systems. According to the findings of the survey, the Indian feet tend to be wider than their Western counterparts, leading to a mismatch. This discrepancy is observed more among children and teenagers who often end up wearing shoes that are either too tight or too loose. This can cause long-term problems like bunions, hammertoes, and ingrown toenails.

The CLRI-developed new system aims to address this problem. Unlike the current 10 sizes in the US system and 7 sizes in the European system, Bha proposes eight distinct sizes catering to various age groups and genders. These sizes will offer additional length and width for improved comfort.

    Simple Sizes, No Confusion

The CLRI-led new initiative ‘Bha’ aims to end confusion over half sizes. The new Indian show sizing system promises both comfort and efficiency, reducing the production costs for shoe manufacturers.

    Trials

Initial trials by the CLRI focus on sizes ranging from III to VIII, covering a vast majority of the Indian population. If the trial is successful, ‘Bha’ would transform the Indian footwear sector, offering tailored comfort and improved foot health for all.

8 Footwear Sizes Proposed By ‘Bha’

BHA proposes eight footwear sizes: I – for infants (0 to 1 year), II – for babies (1 to 3 years), III – for small children (4 to 6 years), IV – for children (7 to 11 years), V – for girls (12 to 13 years), VI – for boys (12 to 14 years), VII – for women (14 years and above), and VIII – for men (15 years and above).

Though it is still in the proposal phase, ‘Bha’ has already the attention of shoe industry veterans. If all goes well, the new shoe sizing system will see the light of day in 2025, promising a brighter, better-fitted future for Indian feet.

  • Purnia Lok Sabha Seat: Pappu Yadav’s Independent Bid Sets Tone For Triangular Contest With RJD’s Bima Bharti And JDU’s Santosh Kumar |

New Dekhi: Purnia has emerged as one of the most prominent constituencies among the 40 Lok Sabha seats of Bihar. The northern state of Bihar is going to polls in all 7 phases and the results will be counted on June 4. Purnia district has one of the highest Muslim populations with approximately 6.5 lakh voters. The seat has around 1.5 lakh Yadav, 3.5 lakh Kushwaha and around 1.5 lakh upper caste voters. Purnia parliamentary constituency is going to take place in the second phase on April 26 as the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced.

In the ongoing Lok Sabha Election, Purnia has become a hot seat after the INDIA alliance in Bihar fielded RJD candidate Beema Bharti ignoring Pappu Yadav, who later filed his nominations as an independent candidate. On the other hand, NDA has re-nominated JD(U) sitting MP Santosh Kumar from the seat.

    Tejashwi’s INDIA vs NDA Pitch

During the Purnia rally, RJD leader Tejashvi Yadav urged the crowd to support his party candidate Beema Bharati and said there is a direct fight between the INDIA alliance and NDA. “Choose INDIA bloc, and if you do not choose INDIA’s Bima Bharti, then choose the NDA. Saaf Baat! Saaf Baat!” he said.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, JD(U) candidate Santosh Kumar secured a victory against Congress candidate Uday Singh Alias Pappu Singh. Kumar had bagged 6,32,924 votes while Singh had polled 3,69,463 votes. In 2014, the contest was between the same candidates with Kumar emerging as the winner. That time, the JDU had got 4,18,826 votes while Pappu Singh had received 3,02,157 votes. In 2019, Kumar increased his vote share by around 13 per cent.

  • ISRO Satellite Images Unveil Concerning Expansion of Himalayan Glacial Lake |

New Delhi: The latest satellite images shared by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)have raised concern globally as it show a significant expansion of the glacial lakes in the Himalayas in the past 3 to 4 decades. According to ISRO’s data, over 600 lakes which amount to 89% of the total glacial lakes on the Himalayas have grown over twice their size in the past 30- 40 years.

Long-term changes in the Ghepang Ghat glacial lake (Indus River Basin) at an elevation of 4,068 m in Himachal Pradesh, India, show a 178 per cent increase in size from 36.49 to 101.30 hectares between 1989 and 2022. The rate of increase is about 1.96 hectares per year.

Long-term satellite imagery covering the catchments of Indian Himalayan river basins from 1984 to 2023 indicates significant changes in glacial lakes. Of the 2,431 lakes larger than 10 hectares identified during 2016-17, 676 glacial lakes have notably expanded since 1984. Specifically, 130 of these lakes are situated within India, with 65, 7, and 58 lakes located in the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra River basins, respectively, the statement read.

The Himalayan Mountains are often referred to as the Third Pole because of their extensive glaciers and snow cover. They are considered highly sensitive to changes in the global climate, both in terms of their physical characteristics and their societal impacts.

Research conducted worldwide has consistently shown that glaciers across the globe have been experiencing unprecedented rates of retreat and thinning since the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century.

This retreat leads to the formation of new lakes and the enlargement of existing ones in the Himalayan region. These bodies of water, created by the melting of glaciers, are known as glacial lakes and play a crucial role as freshwater sources for rivers in the Himalayan region.

However, they also pose significant risks, such as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which can have devastating consequences for communities downstream. GLOFs occur when glacial lakes release large volumes of meltwater due to the failure of natural dams, such as those made of moraine or ice, resulting in sudden and severe flooding downstream, ISRO further stated.

These dam failures can be triggered by various factors, including avalanches of ice or rock, extreme weather events, and other environmental factors. Monitoring and studying the occurrence and expansion of glacial lakes in the Himalayan region is considered challenging due to the inaccessible and rugged terrain.

Satellite remote sensing technology proves to be an excellent tool for inventory and monitoring due to its wide coverage and revisit capability, the ISRO stated, adding that assessing long-term changes in glacial lakes is crucial for understanding glacier retreat rates, assessing GLOF risks, and gaining insights into climate change impacts.

Elevation-based analysis further reveals that 314 lakes are located in the 4,000 to 5,000 m range and 296 lakes are above 5,000 m elevation. The glacial lakes are categorized based on their formation process into four broad categories, namely Moraine-dammed (water dammed by moraine), Ice-dammed (water dammed by ice), Erosion (water dammed in depressions formed by erosion), and other glacial lakes. Among the 676 expanding lakes, the majority of them are Moraine-dammed (307) followed by Erosion (265), other (96), and Ice-dammed (8) glacial lakes, respectively, the release further stated.

Satellite-derived long-term change analyses provide valuable insights for understanding glacial lake dynamics, which are essential for assessing environmental impacts and developing strategies for GLOF risk management and climate change adaptation in glacial environments, it added.

New Delhi: Swati Mohan Rathod’s triumphant journey from the humble streets of Solapur to the prestigious ranks of the civil service is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. Born into a family of modest means, Swati’s mother made extraordinary sacrifices, even mortgaging gold, to ensure her daughter’s education. The fruits of that sacrifice bloomed magnificently when Swati clinched an impressive All India Rank of 492 in the highly competitive UPSC Civil Services Examination of 2023.

In the face of financial adversity and a challenging upbringing, Swati remained steadfast in her resolve to carve out a better future for herself and her family. Instead of succumbing to the weight of poverty, she immersed herself in rigorous UPSC preparation, fueled by the dream of alleviating her parents’ struggles. The tears of joy that welled up in her parents’ eyes upon hearing of her success were worth more to her than any accolade or recognition.

Each setback only served to strengthen her resolve, and after five attempts, she emerged victorious, a shining example of perseverance and resilience.

  • ‘Lies, Hate Speech’: Congress Claims PM Modi’s ‘Wealth To Muslims’ Remark Shows INDIA Is Winning 1st Phase Of Polls |

In a fiery rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s allegations, the Congress party claimed on Sunday that the PM has resorted to “lies” and “hate speech” to divert the public’s attention away from real issues, following a “disappointment” in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The counterattack came in response to PM Modi’s claim that if Congress wins power, it will redistribute wealth to Muslims, citing former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that the minority community has the first claim to the country’s resources.

At a rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara, Modi claimed that the Congress intends to distribute people’s hard-earned money and valuables to “infiltrators” and “those who have more children”.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge retaliated, claiming that no prime minister in India’s history has degraded the dignity of the office more than Modi. He accused Modi of using “lies” and “hate speech” to divert attention, and claimed that the Prime Minister’s actions reflect the values of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Kharge also claimed that lying for power, making false references, and levelling baseless accusations against opponents are hallmarks of the Sangh and BJP’s training. He promised that the country’s 140 crore people would no longer fall for such “lies”.

Kharge siad that the Congress manifesto is for all Indians and promotes equality and justice for all, claiming that the party’s Nyaya Patra is founded on truth.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated that after “disappointment” in the first phase of voting, “the level of lies of Narendra Modi has fallen so much that he now wants to divert the people’s attention from the issues as he is rattled”.

The trends of massive support for Congress’ “revolutionary manifesto” have begun to emerge, Gandhi stated in a Hindi post on X.

“The country will now vote on its issues, including employment, family, and the future. “India will not be diverted,” the former Congress chief stated.

In his remarks in Rajasthan, Modi said, “The Congress manifesto states that they will calculate the gold with mothers and sisters, gather information about it, and then distribute that property. They will distribute it to whom- – Manmohan Singh’s government stated that Muslims have the first right to the country’s assets.”

“Previously, when their (Congress) government was in power, they stated that Muslims have first priority over the country’s assets. This means, to whom will this property be distributed? “It will be distributed to those who have more children,” the prime minister stated.

The Congress has stated that its manifesto does not mention “redistribution” and that it supports a “comprehensive socio-economic caste census”.
