  • ‘Not A Single Party Contesting 272 Seats…’: PM Modi Takes A Dig At Opposition |

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on opposition parties and said that no political party except BJP is contesting 272 seats in Lok Sabha polls which is a minimum number of seats required to form a government.

Attacking on Congress in Banaskantha’s Deesa in Gujarat ahead of the third phase of Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi said, “If you want to form a government, then at least 272 seats are required. Except for the BJP, no political party in the country is contesting 272 seats, and then they are saying they will form the government.”

“Even the royal family of Delhi is not going to vote for Congress… There is no Congress candidate where they vote… Ahmed Patel’s family in Bharuch will not vote for Congress… A big Congress leader who votes in Bhavnagar, will not be able to vote for Congress. This is the condition of the Congress..,” he added.

Further escalating his attack on Congress, Modi said party targeted him in 2014 as a ‘tea-seller’, had got such a reply from the country that the party which once used to occupy 400 seats, is now being brought down to 40 only.

He alleged that the government that was there before 2014 in Centre was only known for news of terrorism, scams and corruption all around the country.

“This Congress ‘Jamat’ should listen, as long as Modi is alive, there will be no reservation on the basis of religion. Reservations for SC, ST, and OBCs have been given by the Constitution, and no one can take them away,” he added.

PM Modi also challenged the Congress to declare that they would not provide reservations on the basis of religion.
“Today, I want to challenge the prince of Congress and his party to declare that if they have the courage, they will never provide reservations on the basis of religion and will not play with the Constitution. They will not do this because “Dal mein kuch kaala hai,” he said.

PM Modi also emphasised that as long as the BJP is there, reservations will be protected.

“The prince of Congress proudly called the entire Modi and OBC communities thieves. No opportunity is being left to spread hatred against Gujaratis. In 2024, Congress and the INDI Alliance have come up with the new lie that reservations will end. Those who are talking about 400 seats, even today, the NDA has around 360 seats in the Parliament, and parties like BJD and YSRCP, which were not in our alliance, supported us anyway. I had the strength of 400 in Parliament. But we did not commit the sin of withdrawing the reservation,” PM Modi said.

Sharpening his attacks on Congress, the Prime Minister added that even today, Congress has no issues, no vision, and no passion to work. “The country was immersed in despair. I left no stone unturned in my efforts. I spent every moment in the name of my countrymen and the country. I tried to take the country out of that troubled situation. “In 2014, Congress tried to belittle me by calling me “chai wala” and doubted what I could do for the country. I was made fun of. But the country gave them such an answer that the party that once used to occupy 400 seats, now being brought down to 40 only,” he said.

According to the IMD’s prediction, Delhi-NCR is expected to encounter strong winds, but the area will not face a heatwave until May 3.

A three-day advisory has been issued by the Meteorological Department for Delhi NCR, cautioning about winds gusting between 25 and 35 km/h. IMD predicts that Delhi’s maximum temperature will peak at 40 degrees Celsius, with the minimum expected to be 24 degrees Celsius.

  • Breaking: No Relief For AAP’s Manish Sisodia, Delhi Court Rejects Second Regular Bail Plea In Excise Policy Case |

NEW DELHI: In a big setback for jailed former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Aam Admi Party leader Manish Sisodia, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court on Tuesday dismissed his second regular bail application in connection with the alleged money laundering probe against him linked to the Excise policy case. Rouse Avenue Court’s Special judge Kaveri Baweja denied bail to Sisodia after reserving the verdict in his bail pleas on April 20.

According to news agency ANI, Sisodia’s bail was strongly opposed by both CBI and ED. While opposing Sisodia’s bail plea, the ED argued that the continuation of the excise policy would have made consumers pay hundreds of crores annually. The central agency has also earlier stated that the excise policy would not have been possible without Sisodia.

Sisodia had sought bail on the grounds of delay in the trial. His earlier bail application was also dismissed by the court last year. The AAP leader has been in custody since February 2023.

Sisodia will now approach the Delhi High Court after Rouse Avenue court dismissed his second regular bail application in the Delhi Excise policy case.

The AAP leader has been denied bail by the trial court, Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court in both ED and CBI cases. The Supreme Court had also dismissed Sisodia’s review petitions against the denial of bail. His curative petitions have also been dismissed.

The Enforcement Directorate, which is investigating the money laundering allegations linked to the excise policy case, has not yet framed charges against the AAP leader. The ED had earlier informed the apex court that it would complete the trial within six to eight months.

Sisodia has been accused of playing a key role in framing the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, tweaking it for the benefit of particular liquor entities and causing a loss of several hundred crores to the state exchequer. Sisodia was first arrested by the CBI in February 2023, and then by the ED in March that year.

In the ED chargesheet, Sisodia has been named as a “key conspirator” in the case, following which he resigned from the Delhi cabinet on February 28, 2023.

  • ‘Contradicting Yourself’: Supreme Court’s Strong Remarks On Arvind Kejriwal’s Plea Against Arrest |

The Supreme Court of India yesterday heard Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest. While the CM’s counsel contended that his arrest was illegal and was done merely based on suspicion, the apex court made some strong remarks. Appearing for Kejriwal, senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi said that a person can be arrested only on evidence of guilt. Referring to Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Singhvi contended that the investigating agency had not recorded the statement of the Delhi Chief Minister, said reports.

However, the top court reacted sharply to this saying that the petitioner is contradicting his own statement. “Are you not contradicting yourself by saying that his statements under Section 50 of the PMLA were not recorded?” said the court adding that first the CM did not appear on summons for recording of statements under Section 50 and now saying it was not recorded. Arvind Kejriwal had refused to appear before the Enforcement Directorate despite the probe agency issuing nine summons to him.

Kejriwal has moved the Supreme Court challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi liquor policy case. Kejriwal contended that his arrest was illegal, politically motivated and aimed at toppling the Delhi government.

According to reports, the top court noted that the petitioner cannot take the defence that his statement was not recorded because he did not go for it when summoned. To this, Singhvi responded, “Non-recording of Section 50 statements is not a defence to arrest me for reasons of believing there is guilt…The ED came to my house to arrest me. Then why can’t ED record my statement under Section 50 at my house?” he added.

The Enforcement Directorate has submitted before the court that Kejriwal was avoiding interrogation while recording his statement under Section 17 of the PMLA. The ED also accused the CM of being evasive and uncooperative.

The top court also asked why Kejriwal did not file a plea for bail in the trial court, Singhvi told the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta that they have approached the Supreme Court as it has ‘wider jurisdiction’.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 and is currently lodged in Tihar jail. The hearing in the case will continue today.

  • How junk food popularity relies on marketing |

The Recipe for Junk Food Success

Junk food marketers have mastered the art of persuasion. They use a potent mix of tactics to make their products seem not only appealing but essential to our happiness and well-being.  Here’s how they do it:

Sensory Overload: Junk food ads are a feast for the eyes and ears. Bright colors, upbeat music, and images of smiling, carefree people enjoying these products trigger our appetite and create positive associations.

Emotional Manipulation: Marketers link junk food to emotions like fun, excitement, and belonging. They suggest that consuming these products will make you popular, cool, and part of the ‘in’ crowd. According to Harvard Business Review, “when companies connect with customers’ emotions, the payoff can be huge”.

The Illusion of Choice: Supermarket shelves are overflowing with different brands and variations of junk food, creating an illusion of vast choice and control. But the reality is that most of these products have similar nutritional profiles. However, as shown in CyberGhost’s blog post, 70% of children (3-4 years old) know the names of junk food brands, but it’s hard for them to recall their last name.

Deceptive Health Claims: Words like “natural,” “low-fat,” or “vitamin-fortified” mislead consumers into thinking some junk foods are healthier than they are. Moreover, scholars from Spain (E. Carrillo, Paula Varela, Ana Salvador, Susana Fiszman) made a food choice survey only to find that by far the most important factors in the food choice of people in Spain are sensory appeal, price, and convenience.
Targeting the Vulnerable: Marketing often targets children and teenagers, who are particularly influenced by colourful packaging, cartoon characters, and celebrity endorsements, establishing brand loyalty early on.

    The Bitter Aftertaste

This constant bombardment of junk food marketing has serious consequences:

Distorted Food Preferences: Our taste buds adapt to the overload of sugar, salt, and fat. Over time, healthy foods can start to seem bland in comparison. This sets the stage for unhealthy eating habits that are difficult to break.

Increased Health Risks: Consumption of junk food contributes to obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. It undermines our health and can shorten our lifespans.

Loss of Food Culture: Traditional, home-cooked meals are being replaced with convenient, processed foods, eroding culinary knowledge and the social enjoyment of meals.

    What Can Be Done?

Breaking free from the junk food cycle requires a conscious effort and a societal shift:

Personal Awareness: The first step is understanding how marketing manipulates our food choices. Learn to read nutrition labels and become a more mindful consumer.

Healthy Alternatives: Make fruits, vegetables, and whole foods the stars of your diet. Experiment with new recipes and rediscover the pleasure of nutritious eating.

Education and Regulation: We need better education about nutrition, starting from a young age. There’s also a need for stricter regulations on junk food marketing, particularly marketing aimed at children.

Junk food doesn’t become popular on its own. It’s a carefully orchestrated marketing campaign that plays on our emotions and vulnerabilities. By recognizing these tactics, actively choosing healthy options, and demanding change within the food industry, we can take back control of our health and pave the way for a more balanced relationship with food.
