  • What happened in Rajya Sabha has pained me: Venkaiah Naidu

Rajya Sabhachairman Venkaiah Naidu said he was “pained” by the scenes played out in the Upper House on Thursday over the RTI Amendment Bill. On Thursday, opposition members had alleged “intimidation” and “influencing” of votes by a BJPMP to get the motion to send the amendment to the select committee rejected. The treasury benches had countered the allegations vociferously.
Congress and most other opposition members had walked out in protest over the voting process. The bill was passed in the Upper House following a voice vote.

While not elaborating on the happenings, Naidu said in the House on Friday, “What happened yesterday pained me. It has pained the people of the country also. We should see to it that such situations and such scenes are avoided in future.
“There has to be clarity that if any bill originating from the other House is taken up in this House and if any member wants to move amendments, if amendments are proposed, then those amendments and bills would be taken up together for discussion. They would be taken up first after discussion and then, there would be voting on amendments. That has been the practice in the House since long.”
He further said, “Another thing was brought to my notice, which is again not a healthy thing. Once the voting process starts, even individual members are not supposed to move this side or that side and go and talk to them. If they want to talk to any member, they are at liberty to talk to them before the voting process starts and, that too, preferably outside the House. We have a lot of time. We can discuss.”

  • Redmi smart TV 70-inch launch sooner than expected, hints 3C certification site

fter smartphones, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi is gearing up to launch smart TVs. The company is already working on two smart TVs. Earlier on Friday, a leak revealed some key details about the Redmi TV. The leak revealed that there will be two Redmi TVs and not one as rumoured previously. One is a 70-inch screen TV while the other one is a smaller TV and sports 40-inch screen. The Redmi TV 70-inch has already received certification from 3C. This hints at the imminent launch of the 70-inch Redmi TV.

The Redmi TV with 70-inch screen may come before the 40-inch model. This is clearly because the 70-inch Redmi TV has made its way to the 3C certification site already. The smart TV has been spotted on the certification site with model number L70M5-RA. Sadly, the certification listing doesn’t reveal any further details about the Redmi TV, not even the launch timeline.

Leaks and rumours suggest that both the Redmi TVs will come with 4K UHD screen. The leaks have also suggested that the Redmi TVs will cost very cheap. Both of them. Having said that it won’t be wrong to say that Redmi will apply its smartphone strategy to its upcoming smart TVs. This means expect both the Redmi TVs to offer good value for the money.

It could be possible that the upcoming Redmi smart TVs will be much cheaper than Mi TVs that are one of the cheapest smart TVs available in the market right now. Leaks also suggest that both the upcoming Redmi smart TVs will have the same specs and offer 4K UHD screen in order to deliver better and enhanced visual experience to the users.

  • Azam Khan should not only apologise in Parliament but to all women: Mayawati

BSP supremo Mayawati on Friday attacked Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan for his sexist remark against MP Rama Devi in the Lok Sabha, saying he should not only apologise in Parliament but to all women.

“The indecent language used by Azam Khan, an SP MP from Uttar Pradesh, against a woman presiding officer in Lok Sabha yesterday hurt the dignity and honour of women, and is very condemnable. For this he should not only apologise in Parliament but to all women,” Mayawati said in a tweet.

Khan on Thursday courted a fresh controversy when he made a sexist remark against Devi, who was in the Chair in the Lok Sabha, sparking an uproar and demands for his apology.

  • DU opposes intervention plea by RTI Activists in PM Narendra Modi Degree case

The Delhi University is opposing the intervention application filed by three RTI Activists in the case concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree from the University of Delhi.

RTI Activists Anjali Bhardwaj, Nikhil Dey, and Amrita Johri had filed the intervention application last year in order to assist the Court in determining the importance of the right to information in such cases.

DU has claimed that the application is bereft of any merits and is thus liable to be dismissed.

“.. the intervenor is nothing but a busybody or meddlesome interloper, who is surreptitiously trying to intervene in the present matter, not to assist this Hon’ble Court on the questions of law, but from extraneous reasons.”

The assertions form part of an affidavit filed in the matter.

It is submitted that the Activists have no locus and are neither person aggrieved nor necessary party or proper party.

Claiming that the Activists were interfering for oblique motives, it is further stated

“The intent and design of the applicant is to abuse the process of law and to espouse a personal claim.”

The mere assertion that the applicant is a public-spirited person and is interested in the meaningful implementation of the right to information act is no legal ground warranting intervention in the present proceeding, it is contended.

The University of Delhi had approached the Delhi High Court against the 2016 order of the Central Information Commission which had allowed inspection of Delhi University’s 1978 BA degree records.

The varsity challenged the order on the ground that it violated the RTI Act’s provision pertaining to privacy under Section 8(1)(j) and that it is in possession of the information being sought in a fiduciary capacity under section 8(1)(e) of the Act.

The intervention application by the RTI activists urged the Court to dismiss DU’s petition as it was filed on an incorrect premise. The Activists claimed that the varsity misrepresented the provisions of the RTI Act and the factual position of law.

  • You’ll get bloodier nose next time: Army chief to Pak on Kargil Vijay Diwas

Twenty years after Pakistani regulars and the armed militants supported by it were bombed by Indian forces from the mountains in Kargil, Islamabad has been warned not to repeat its mistake by Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat.

General Bipin Rawat couldn’t have been more direct in his advice: “You will get a “bloodier nose,” he told Pakistan, if it chose to repeat Kargil-like misadventure.

“Don’t do it. Misadventures are normally not repeated. You will get a bloodier nose next time,” he said in a press conference when asked to articulate his message to Pakistan on the 20th anniversary of India’s victory in the Kargil war.

July 26 is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas every year to mark India’s triumph over Pakistan on this day in 1999.

General Rawat suggested that Pakistan’s promises to act against militants and their networks couldn’t be trusted as it was only meant to secure international funding .

“There is a difference between talk and action. We all know the situation in Pakistan right now. We all know who controls the country. They are ready for anything to get money. Once they get it, they will do what they have been doing for the last so many years,” the Army Chief said.

  • 75Hz screen mod available for the Xiaomi Mi 9T/Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro

ainstream smartphones have just begun exploring higher refresh rate displays, something that was previously done on just a few niche smartphones. The OnePlus 7 Pro was widely praised for its 90Hz display that lent the phone some of its smoothness and fluidity. Other flagships released this year have come with more conventional 60Hz displays; but some of these flagships, like the Xiaomi Mi 9, can have their displays tweaked to run at a higher-than-stock refresh rate. Now, we are seeing similar modifications appear for the Xiaomi Mi 9T (or the Redmi K20, as it is called in some regions) and the Redmi K20 Pro.

Similar to the Mi 9’s display mod which could force a higher refresh rate of 84Hz, the modifications for the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro force a higher refresh rate of 75Hz. Developers working on this mod are also confident that a 90Hz refresh rate is also possible on the device, but this is not yet available.

For both the phones, the procedure to install the modification is similar to the Mi 9’s procedures too. You would need an unlocked bootloader to flash this mod, and depending on the method you choose to install, you would also need a custom recovery like TWRP, or root. The basic flow of steps is to first make a backup of your DTBO partition either through TWRP or through the Lanthanum System Toolbox app. Then, flash the modified DTBO image through TWRP, fastboot or the Lanthanum app. You can find more detailed instructions as well as download links for the modified image and the Lanthanum app in the threads linked below for the devices.

  • What will be family’s fate if husband is sent to jail, JKNC leader Hasnain Masoodi asks

Lok Sabha is discussing instant triple talaq bill. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Minority Affairs Minister, says that the Opposition is against the triple talaq Bill because they are afraid of losing a certain set of votes. The Bill is in lines with the constitutional commitment. The Bill will protect Muslim women, he adds.

After Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and MP Meenakshi Lekhi, DMK’s Kanimozhi opposes the Bill. Kanimozhi says women’s rights includes men’s rights also. She questioned the bail clauses. “What about Hindu women and Christian women? No one sends a Hindu man to jail for abandoning his wife,” she says. “Domestic violence laws are stronger than this Bill,” she says. “When the Supreme Court approved women entering Sabarimala, why was BJP opposing it? Why is marital rape not considered a crime,” she asks.

“Why is this government in such rush to pass these bills? Why bills that arouse the communal passion are being pushed?” she asks. “You are passing Bills on women without having adequate women in the House,” she says and asks the government to pass the women’s reservation Bill first. “What laws are you bringing to stop ‘honour’ killing, mob lynching? What freedom we have when we can’t eat what we like, pray whom we like or refrain from praying?”

What freedom we have when we can’t eat what we like, pray whom we like or refrain from praying?”

BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi rises to address the Lok Sabha over triple talaq bill and starts by giving example of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Lekhi goes on to talk about the Shah Bano case and how Rajiv Gandhi government overturned the alimony clause. She says opposition is unable to digest that Narendra Modi is being a brother to innocent Muslim women. She mentions Akhilesh Yadav’s name and Samajwadi Party members object to it.

Lekhi quoted Nehru and said that he wanted to see a just India and turn religious India to a secular India. “Isn’t that what our Prime Minister Narendra Modi trying to do? This Bill will ensure that,” she says.

Ravi Shankar Prasad rises to present The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 for consideration and passing. NK Premachandran says that Supreme Court has never given a directive to the government to make a law on this. Only the AIMPLB wants the government to make legislation on this. He asks why the government is not ready to make a legislation on mob lynching, when it has been directed by the Supreme Court. He says this is a politically motivated Bill to target a particular community.

He says consecutive promulgation of Ordinances is a fraud on the Constitution.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury opposes the introduction of The Inter-State River Water Disputes Bill, 2019. TR. Baalu says the government is bulldozing Bills through the Parliament.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 to reportedly have touch bezel and Bluetooth 5 support

Samsung is reportedly working on two smartwatches under its Galaxy lineup — Galaxy Watch 2 with codename Renaissance and Galaxy Watch Active2. While the pictures of the Galaxy Watch Active2 were leaked earlier, now some of the device’s specs and features have surfaced online.

Samsung’s smartwatches have this attractive rotating bezel for navigation but the South Korean giant ditched it with the launch of Galaxy Watch Active earlier this year. But if the latest reports are to be believed, then Samsung will bring a similar feature with its successor — Galaxy Watch Active2.

As per the report from SamMobile, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 will use a touch sensor around the bezel of the display to simulate that rotating bezel. When the user slides his/her finger around the screen, the software would accept the input just like the physical rotating bezel used to.

Along with this, some specifications of this upcoming wearable device have also leaked online. The report adds that the Galaxy Watch Active2 will come in two models — 44mm and 40mm. The 44mm Active2 will have a 1.4-inch display while the 40mm variant will see a 1.2-inch display. Both the devices will come with 360×360 AMOLED panels with DX+ glass. It also adds that the case will be built to MIL-STD-810G durability standards.
