  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi gets congratulatory message from India captain Virat Kohli

Indian captain Virat Kohli might be in England, looking to bring back the World Cup home, but the importance of the political situation back home is not lost upon him. Reacting to the massive victory of Bharatiya Janata Party in the parliamentary elections, Kohli tweeted a message congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi on winning a second term.

“Congratulations @narendramodi ji. We believe India is going to reach greater heights with your vision. Jai hind,” Kohli wrote on the social media platform.

Apart from Kohli, many cricketers and other sports personalities have also extended their congratulatory messages to PM Modi, who is now set to start his second term as PM.

Kohli and the Indian team has reached England and also had their first practice session on Thursday. The team will play a warm-up match against Bangladesh on Saturday. They next take on New Zealand in their final warm-up match before opening the campaign against South Africa on June 5.

  • “Many Congratulations To PM Modi For Massive Victory,” Tweets Sushma Swaraj

With leads in the election results showing the BJP crossing the halfway mark on its own steam and a sweep by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha election, leaders of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party tweeted to congratulate party workers and supporters.

“Many congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for delivering such a massive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party,” Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted. “I express my gratitude to the people of the country,” tweeted the Foreign Minister who was in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

The BJP is doing well in most states, including the three heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, wrested by the Congress in December. It is also ahead in Karnataka – a state the Congress rules jointly with HD Kumaraswamy.

Elections were held on 542 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats and a party or alliance needs 272 seats to form government; the Lok Sabha election results 2019 are being announced today.

“I am on my way to the counting centre at Jaipur to meet our counting representatives. My salute to the untiring workers of BJP and Jaipur Rural, this is their service to the nation,” Union Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore tweeted.

Union Minister Uma Bharti tweeted in Hindi, “Congratulations Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this landslide win. Jai ho Baba Kedarnath.” PM Modi had gone to the hill temple in Uttarakhand after voting in the last of the seven-phase national election ended on Sunday last.

  • Stay vigilant, Priyanka Gandhi tells partymen in audio messa

A day after various exit polls painted a grim picture for Congress, party national general secretary and incharge of eastern Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday sent an audio message to party workers, telling them not to get ‘demoralised’ and to remain ‘vigilant’ until counting was over. Exit polls by most agencies have indicated a clear mandate for the incumbent Narendra Modi government.
“Pyare karyakarta behno aur bhaiyon, afwahon aur exit polls se himmat mat hariye, ye apka hausla todne ke liye phailai jaa rahi hain (My dear sisters and brothers, don’t get disheartened by rumours and exit polls. They are aimed at crushing your confidence and morale),” she said in her half-aminute message, which was circulated among scores of party workers.

  • Modi looks a winner, but it’s not quite off the mark

Politicians pretend that they do not like exit polls, even when they are shown to be winning. It is not surprising. The politicians know that the real test is the actual outcome. Conjectures, however close and legitimate, are not satisfying. And the politicians who are on the losing side do not want to accept defeat until it really hits them.

The May 19 exit polls conducted by a dozen and more television news channels and professional pollsters mostly indicated Narendra Modi’s BJP-led NDA was the winner. The BJP leaders are maintaining a smug silence, and saying their tally would be better than projected by the most favourable poll. Those who are arrayed against Mr Narendra Modi’s right-wing politics — perhaps Mr Modi doesn’t care what his politics is called as long as he is winning, and he loves to win every time — are not only sceptical about the exit poll projections, but are positively negative about the findings. The hostility is understandable, especially if Mr Modi is to emerge the winner on Many 23, as predicted by the exit polls.

  • Shiv Sena’s Unusual Praise For Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka: “They Worked Hard”

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday expressed confidence that a government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be re-elected for a second term as the exit polls show a “clear trend” in the BJP-led NDA’s favour.

At the same time, it also praised Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for their “hard work”, saying their party will get enough seats to bag the leader of opposition”s post in the new Lok Sabha.

Elections to 542 seats of 543-member Lok Sabha ended on Sunday and counting of votes is scheduled for Thursday.

Most exit polls have forecast another term for Prime Minister Modi, with some of them projecting that the BJP-led NDA would get over 300 seats to comfortably cross the majority mark of 272 in the Lok Sabha.

“There was no need for political pundits to say the Modi government will be re-elected. The ground situation was such that people were leading the poll campaign and had made up their mind to vote Modi back to power,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ”Saamana”.

Noting that the exit polls show a “clear trend” in favour of the Modi-led government, it said there are also predictions of the BJP having a clear lead in the Congress- ruled Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and also in West Bengal, where the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC is in power.

“In Maharashtra, the Sena-BJP alliance will register a historic win,” the Marathi daily claimed.

“Modi will be the prime minister again and the Congress and other opposition parties will fail to make a mark. But, it is better to wait till May 23 for the actual results,” said the Sena, which is an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra.

The editorial also had a word of praise for Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

“They worked hard. The Congress will be successful as a strong opposition party,” it said.

“In 2014, Rahul Gandhi could not win (enough) seats to get the leader of opposition’s post. This time, the Congress will have a leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha. This will surely be Rahul Gandhi’s success,” the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP bagged 282 seats while the Congress managed to win only 44 seats.

In order to get the leader of opposition’s post, the party concerned must have at least 10 per cent of the total strength of the House.

  • Exit polls 2019 predict Modi 2.0! But as PM, he has failed to end India’s tax terror, claims report

Exit polls are pointing to another term for Narendra Modi in India, but don’t expect overseas investors to be as pumped up by his victory as they were five years ago. Before he offers any new promises, they would like the prime minister to fulfill his pledge to make the tax system less capricious.

In its 2014 election manifesto, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party attacked the then Congress Party-led government for unleashing “tax terrorism and uncertainty,” which it argued, “not only creates anxiety among the business class and negatively impacts the investment climate, but also dents the image of the country.”

The transaction in question was an eight-year-old reorganization. Cairn Energy transferred ownership of its Indian oil field in 2006 to Cairn India Ltd., to prepare for the local unit’s initial public offering. But in January 2014, the Indian tax department began questioning the internal transfer of shares, weaponizing a 2012 law that allowed for windfall gains to be probed retrospectively, going all the way back to 1962. Cairn has been contesting the government’s right to tax the transaction.

Modi’s party – looking to unseat the Manmohan Singh government on charges of corruption, policy paralysis and economic mismanagement – managed to latch on to the angst caused by retrospective taxation.

  • “Don’t Be Afraid”: Rahul Gandhi’s Message To Party On “Fake Exit Polls”

A day before the counting of votes, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has urged party men to be “alert in the next 24 hours” and be fearless in a tweet similar to his sister Priyanka Gandhi’s audio message on Sunday, when exit polls predicted a dismal scenario for the party. He also called the exit polls fake.

“The next 24 hours are important. Be alert and vigilant. Don’t be afraid. You are fighting for the truth. Don’t be disheartened by what the fake exit polls are propagating. Have faith in yourselves and the Congress. Your hard work will not be in vain, Jai Hindi,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

Exit polls after the last day of voting for the national election on Sunday predicted 300-plus for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and 122 for the Congress and its allies. “Non-aligned” parties were given 114.

The same night, Priyanka Gandhi said in a message to party workers that they should not fall for “rumours” intended to make them drop their guard ahead of the counting of votes.

“My dear Congress workers, sisters and brothers… Don’t let rumours and exit polls discourage you. This is being done just to break your determination. It is very important that you remain alert amid all this. Please continue to keep vigil outside strongrooms and counting centres. We are confident that our combined efforts will bear fruit,” she said in the audio message.

  • On final voting day, Rahul Gandhi tweets video message for ‘all mothers and sisters’

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday ‘saluted’ women for playing a key role in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections as candidates as well as for turning up in large numbers to vote.

“Today is the 7th and last phase of polling. Our mothers and sisters have played a key role in these elections, not just as candidates, but also as committed voters whose voices must be heard. I salute them all,” Gandhi tweeted.
Gandhi had earlier met Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday in which both the leaders reportedly discussed the possibility of forming an alternative government at the Centre if the BJP does not get enough numbers to retain the power.

  • Not Respected Anymore”: Rahul Gandhi Jabs Election Body As Polling Ends

Congress president Rahul Gandhi launched a fresh attack on the Election Commission just as theLok Sabha polls ended on Sunday, alleging that it had yielded to the ruling BJP despite having the constitutional responsibility of providing a level playing field to all political parties.

“From electoral bonds and EVMs to manipulating the election schedule, NaMo TV, Modi’s Army & now the drama in Kedarnath; the Election Commission’s capitulation before Mr Modi & his gang is obvious to all Indians. The EC used to be feared & respected. Not anymore,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Through the course of the elections, many opposition leaders – including Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president Chandrababu Naidu and Rahul Gandhi himself – accused the poll body of going easy on the BJP. It was also accused of giving clean chits to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah despite “irrefutable evidence” of poll code violations.

Soon after Rahul Gandhi’s tweet emerged, Congress leader P Chidambaram hit the social media platform to air his grievances against the poll body too. “Our charge had been that the Election Commission was sleeping on the job. Now, we can go further and say that it completely surrendered its independence and authority. Shame!” he tweeted.
