Veteran airline executive Vili Wols takes helm of IndiGo amid expansion plans

IndiGo confirmed that veteran aviation leader Vili Wols has assumed the chief executive officer position, aiming to drive the airline’s ambitious expansion roadmap. The carrier’s statement, issued on Monday, underscored Wols’s extensive background in global airline management.

Before joining IndiGo, Wols served as director‑general of the International Air Transport Association, where he played a crucial role in shaping industry standards. Earlier in his career, he piloted Air Lingus before climbing to its CEO role in 2001, later heading British Airways from 2005 to 2011, and subsequently overseeing the International Airlines Group—a parent company of British Airways, Iberia and several other airlines—until 2020.

Rahul Bhatia, managing director of IndiGo, expressed confidence that Wols’s blend of strategic insight and operational expertise will boost the airline’s international growth plans. He noted that the carrier is entering its third decade with a strong foundation and is ready to capture the opportunities presented by India’s rapidly expanding aviation market.

As chief executive, Wols will focus on expanding IndiGo’s global network, sharpening its commercial and network strategy, improving operational efficiency, and elevating the overall passenger experience.
