Varanasi Gets Arvind Garment Unit Creating 1,000+ Jobs

A new garment manufacturing unit set up by Arvind Limited in Varanasi has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the facility expected to create employment for over 1,000 people.

The Prime Minister opened the unit on Sunday. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were present, along with senior government officials and representatives of the industry.

The plant, built with an investment of approximately Rs 150 crore, is the first manufacturing unit Arvind Limited has established in Uttar Pradesh. The company anticipates that a large portion of the new jobs will go to women.

The facility covers 5.5 acres and has a total built area of around 65,000 square feet. Using advanced automated stitching techniques, it will produce garments made from knitwear, which are clothes crafted from knitted fabric.

The unit's revenue potential is pegged at Rs 250 crore. The project is also expected to encourage more industrial activity in Varanasi and generate opportunities for skill development among local residents.

Sanjay Lalbhai, Chairman of Arvind Limited, along with Vice Chairmen Punit Lalbhai and Kulin Lalbhai, received the Prime Minister at the event.

The Prime Minister toured the manufacturing unit with company leaders and viewed its modern production systems.

Sanjay Lalbhai said the inauguration by the Prime Minister was a source of pride for Arvind. He noted that the Lalbhai group began its journey in 1897 and that its history is closely tied to India's industrial progress. Drawing inspiration from Kasturbhai Lalbhai's forward-looking approach to building institutions, the group has invested in ventures that contribute to economic growth, employment and nation-building.

According to him, the Varanasi investment will open up significant job opportunities. He also said the workforce will include a considerable number of women, reflecting the vital role of women power in the country's development.

Punit Lalbhai said India is passing through an important phase of change in garment production. He cited the country's solid textile supply chain, skilled labour and rising global demand for sourcing from diverse origins as reasons India can join the leading manufacturing nations.

He emphasised that taking advantage of this opportunity requires sustained investment in production capacity, productivity, sustainability and workforce skills. The Varanasi unit, he said, will promote local hiring and local purchases of goods and services, while also boosting supply chain, transport and other local service activities.

Kulin Lalbhai said Uttar Pradesh is building a reputation as a key manufacturing destination. He pointed to infrastructure development, industrial expansion, better connectivity and a focus on skilling as factors creating a supportive environment for industries to grow. With its expanding textile and apparel industry, he added, the state is well placed to strengthen India's manufacturing ecosystem and draw long-term investment.
