UPI Transaction Volume Surges 13,000‑Fold in Ten Years

UPI has become the backbone of India’s digital payments, delivering a staggering rise in transaction value over its first decade. The Ministry of Finance reported that yearly volume jumped from 1.78 crore rupees in the 2016‑17 fiscal year to a massive 24,162 crore rupees in FY 2025‑26, an increase of more than 13,000 times.

Such growth reflects the platform’s ability to handle both domestic payments and cross‑border transactions, now functional in eleven overseas jurisdictions. The finance ministry’s announcement on X underscored the strategic importance of this expansion, citing countries like France, Singapore, the UAE, Greece and Mauritius as early adopters.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the QR‑code payment culture as a “daily conversation” among Indians, while Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri credited the Prime Minister’s vision for turning UPI into a secure, fast, and inclusive payment engine.

Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that the scale of UPI’s adoption validates the Digital India mission, proving that a robust public infrastructure can empower citizens with quick and reliable financial services.
