Truck Owners Question Delays as Tamil Nadu Pushes GPS Tracking for Mining Supplies
Sector leaders in Tamil Nadu’s haulage community have openly challenged the state’s pace of GPS roll‑out for mineral trucks. G. Ganesh, secretary of the State Truck Owners’ Association, highlighted that the price of compliant GPS kits has dropped to Rs 3,700, and many vendors can supply over 100,000 units meeting the AIS‑140 specification. Despite this, officials claim that short‑term stock is insufficient to equip the remaining 110,000 trucks. Ganesh warned that the government’s reluctance to enforce the requirement could undermine its promise to curb illegal mining. Meanwhile, the department reassured that it is investigating fake QR‑coded mineral transit passes and that a dedicated helpline will soon be linked to the Chennai control room to receive complaints on mining violations.
