Trade Grows to $4.2B as India, Morocco Eye New Sectors
Trade between India and Morocco has surged to about $4.2 billion, according to Morocco's Ambassador to India, Mohammed Malki. He said the figure marks a major leap from roughly $1 to $1.2 billion in 2015, and that both countries are now looking to expand their economic partnership into fresh areas.
The number of Indian companies in Morocco has risen from 13 to 47. Malki said that during the visit of His Majesty, about 12 to 13 Indian companies were active in the country. Today, at least 47 Indian companies are investing directly, and more than 200 companies have an indirect presence.
He explained that initially it was challenging to convince the local business community that Morocco was a suitable platform for expansion. Over time, however, they recognised its potential on their own. Morocco's investment climate, infrastructure and global connectivity are considered strong.
Logistics is a key strength. The Tanger Med port is regarded as a leading port in Africa and the Mediterranean. Morocco is also developing specialised ports, which has further strengthened its logistics capacity.
India is keen to increase its presence in Africa, particularly in western and French-speaking countries. Malki said Morocco could serve as an important partner and gateway for Indian companies in this effort. Joint ventures and partnerships could give new momentum to development in the Global South, while strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, education and other fields.
On regional tensions, the ambassador said the crisis in the Middle East has disrupted maritime trade and shipping. Both countries have stressed the need for uninterrupted supply and transport of energy and other goods. He said a lasting solution cannot come through weapons and that all parties must return to the negotiating table to find a political settlement.
