State‑level data for June 2024 reveals that Maharashtra topped the GST collection chart with Rs 9,924 crore, followed by Gujarat at Rs 4,333 crore. Karnataka contributed Rs 4,118 crore, Tamil Nadu Rs 3,639 crore, and Uttar Pradesh Rs 3,249 crore.
These five states together accounted for a substantial share of the national GST intake, reflecting their large industrial bases, vibrant services sectors, and strong compliance frameworks. The figures also indicate that regional economies are playing a crucial role in sustaining the overall tax revenue growth.
Policy makers are focusing on replicating the best practices from these high‑performing states to boost collections in lower‑contributing regions.
