Timor-Leste Seeks Partnership with India for Greater Sunrise Gas Project

The Greater Sunrise gas field, located in the Timor Sea, holds an estimated five trillion cubic feet of natural gas – enough to power regional economies for three decades. Ambassador Jose Luis Gutierrez emphasized that Timor‑Leste is looking to India for strategic partnership in extracting, processing and exporting this resource. He outlined a roadmap that includes constructing an LNG plant, upgrading existing refineries and laying new pipelines that could connect to Indian markets. "We view India not as an external power but as a long‑standing regional partner," Gutierrez said, reiterating Timor‑Leste’s commitment to shared prosperity. The ambassador also highlighted ongoing collaborations in education, where an Indian investor is partnering with a Catholic university to strengthen medical training, and praised India’s diplomatic leadership in maintaining peace and stability across the Indo‑Pacific.
