New Solar-Powered Boat Links Weli to Kadinamkulam Lake

A pioneering solar‑powered boat service was launched on Wednesday, connecting the tourist village of Weli with Kadinamkulam Lake. The initiative, unveiled by Transport Minister C.P. John, reopens a historic water route that had lain dormant for decades.

The 24‑seat vessel, equipped with solar panels, covers the 14‑kilometre stretch in roughly two hours, offering passengers a quiet, eco‑friendly ride while showcasing the natural beauty of Kerala's backwaters.

Beyond providing a convenient transport option, the service aims to revive the old canal system, encouraging regular use to keep the waterways clear and navigable. John highlighted that the route, originally commissioned during the era of Rani Parvati Bai, holds cultural and economic importance for the region.

The minister positioned the boat link as a key component of a broader tourism circuit that stretches from Kovalam to Varkala, leveraging Weli's proximity to the international airport and the nearby Kochuveli railway station. This integrated approach is expected to boost visitor numbers and stimulate local businesses.

John concluded by urging authorities to focus not only on building new infrastructure but also on maintaining and actively using existing canals, ensuring they remain viable assets for future generations.
