How SEBI’s dual reforms protect investors from scams and risks

SEBI has taken a two‑pronged approach to strengthen investor protection. First, the regulator overhauled its Document Number Verification System, mandating the entry of five specific identifiers – outward number, issuing officer, issuance date, subject line, and recipient – to confirm whether a letter truly originates from SEBI. This change, effective from September 2026, eliminates the previous loophole where scammers could reuse legitimate outward numbers on forged notices.

Second, SEBI launched Project Jagrook, compelling every stock‑broking house to embed investor‑awareness and risk‑disclosure messages on their digital portals. The rollout began on 5 October 2026 with website‑only displays and moved to a mandatory website and app schedule on 1 November 2026, featuring a daily rotation of awareness and risk alerts. Earlier, in May 2023, SEBI had mandated risk‑disclosure statements to alert investors about market hazards.

Combined, these measures aim to curb fraudulent communications, raise market literacy, and ensure that investors receive consistent, up‑to‑date warnings about the inherent risks of securities trading.
