Seasonal Salt Harvest in Vedaranyam Hits 85% of Projected Output

The salt‑making belt of Vedaranyam, located in Nagapattinam, has recorded an 85% fulfilment of the anticipated 2024 harvest. The seasonal target of 175,000 tonnes is now within striking distance, thanks to an unseasonably long period of high temperature that has amplified evaporation across the 3,000 acres cultivated in Agasthiyampalli, Kodiyakkadu and Kadinalvayal.

The industry comprises roughly 800 small‑scale entrepreneurs who generate significant seasonal employment. Production typically kicks off in February and proceeds until the north‑east monsoon arrives, usually in October. With the monsoon still expected to be delayed, producers are optimistic that the remaining 15% can be secured if the dry conditions hold.

In contrast, the previous year’s excessive rains curtailed output to barely 40% of the normal 170,000‑200,000 tonnes. This season, after intermittent showers in the first weeks, the May heat spike raised water vaporisation, leading to quicker salt crystal formation. Operators stress that after each rain, a minimum of a week of continuous sunshine is required for crystals to develop fully.

To cope with the extreme heat, laborers have shifted their workday to begin at 3 a.m., completing harvesting, collection and stacking before the sun reaches its peak. Around 60% of the salt produced is food grade, while the remaining 40% caters to industrial needs. The product serves markets in Tamil Nadu and neighboring Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, with an average market price of INR 1,000 per tonne and an estimated yield of 150 tonnes per acre under optimal conditions.
