With President Min Aung Hlaing at the helm, Myanmar stands at a pivotal juncture to elevate ties with India through a transactional spirit, particularly by broadening the rupee-kyat trading framework. This recommendation emerges from a detailed analysis by The Secretariat, spotlighting immense prospects post the new government’s formation.

Myanmar’s central role in India’s foreign policy pillars—Act East, Neighborhood First, and Indo-Pacific—cannot be overstated. Contrary to perceptions of a China monopoly, Hlaing’s leadership is poised to maintain equilibrium with major powers like India, China, and Russia, opening doors for New Delhi’s deeper resource investments.

Rooted in deep historical and geographic links, the bilateral relationship demands more than security cooperation. The report stresses integrating political engagement to address evolving dynamics.

India’s steadfast support for Myanmar’s internal resolution via a homegrown approach shines through humanitarian responses to natural calamities such as Cyclone Mocha, Typhoon Yagi, and the Mandalay quake. Promoting peace, halting violence, and dialogue remains India’s core stance, complemented by aid in democratic processes and stakeholder capacity enhancement.

Crucial projects like the Kaladan initiative and the trilateral highway with Thailand are lagging, yet Myanmar’s backing could accelerate them, enhancing trade routes.

The rupee-kyat system, effective since early 2024, holds transformative potential. Scaling it to include fuels and drugs would amplify Indian exports and enable Myanmar’s agricultural shipments in rupees, fostering trade balance and currency stability.

This report serves as a roadmap, envisioning a future where economic interdependence drives stability and growth for both nations.
