RBI Has Not Announced Any New Rs 1,000 Banknote, Says PIB

No new Rs 1,000 banknote has been announced by the Reserve Bank of India, according to the PIB Fact Check unit of the central government.

On Tuesday, the unit labelled as false a claim that circulated widely after posts appeared on Instagram, X and Telegram. These posts featured people apparently holding a yellow Rs 1,000 note.

Some social media users and content creators maintained that the note was new or would be launched on a specific date. Their claims generated considerable speculation.

PIB Fact Check clarified that the RBI has not made any declaration about issuing a new Rs 1,000 note. The agency's response was aimed at correcting the record on the matter.

In a post on X, the agency appealed to citizens to rely only on official sources for verification. It also asked them to avoid sharing unverified content online.

The agency noted in its post that many social media posts had claimed the release of a new Rs 1,000 note, adding that the claim was false.

The clarification comes amid misinformation surrounding viral images of the alleged banknote, which had sparked online debate among users.

Authorities have advised people to remain cautious while viewing or forwarding such material. Suspicious claims can be reported to PIB Fact Check.

India currently has Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series banknotes of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200 and Rs 500 in circulation.

The original Rs 1,000 note lost its legal validity on November 8, 2016, when the government announced the demonetisation of the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The move was aimed at curbing black money, counterfeit currency and corruption.

A new Rs 500 note with a fresh design was later introduced. The Rs 1,000 note, however, was not brought back. Instead, the RBI issued a Rs 2,000 note, which was withdrawn from circulation in May 2023.
