Private Bank Stocks Lead Gains; Mid‑Cap Indices Dip Amid Oil Upswing

Friday’s trading session saw Indian equities finishing strongly despite external pressures from West Asian tensions and volatile global cues. The BSE Sensex climbed 964.58 points (1.25%) to end at 78,151.45, while the NSE Nifty 50 added 261.55 points (1.09%) to settle at 24,334.30.

The market opened higher, with the Sensex at 77,370.77 and the Nifty at 24,127.60, both above their prior closes. The Sensex later reached a high of 78,282.55, up 1,095.68 points (1.41%) intraday, and the Nifty peaked at 24,367.30, a 294.55‑point (1.22%) gain.

Sectoral performance highlighted private banking as the top performer, posting a 2 percent rise. Information technology (1.75%), banking (1.63%), real estate (1.38%) and automobiles (1.24%) also posted solid gains. Oil & gas, FMCG and PSU banks joined the winners' list.

In contrast, the Nifty Mid‑Cap and Small‑Cap baskets slipped 0.41 percent and 0.21 percent, respectively, as crude oil prices stayed elevated and US‑Iran tensions lingered. Pharma, healthcare, metals and consumer durables each declined, with pharma falling 1.40 percent.

Major contributors to the rally included Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank. Within the Nifty 50, Tech Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, TCS and ICICI posted the biggest percentage gains, while Hindalco, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Wipro, Sun Pharma, Apollo Hospitals and Max Healthcare were the largest decliners.

Technical analysis indicated the market broke a five‑day consolidation phase, signalling a bullish breakout. The indices remain above key moving averages, and the RSI shows a bullish crossover, reinforcing the positive momentum. Analysts expect the Nifty to test the 24,800 mark, with 24,200 acting as critical support.
