Prime Minister's Urban Housing Initiative Reaches 1.25 Crore Approvals
New Delhi, August 9 – The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs announced that the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme – Urban (PMAY‑U) has now secured approvals for more than 1.25 crore houses nationwide. Of these, over 1 crore homes have already been completed and handed over to beneficiaries.
The most recent approval round added 2.09 lakh houses for economically weaker sections across 16 states and Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. These approvals were granted at the eighth meeting of the Central Approval and Monitoring Committee for PMAY‑U 2.0, held at the Sankalp Bhawan in the capital. The meeting was chaired by Secretary Satendra Singh of the Urban Development Division, which reviewed progress and cleared additional proposals from the states.
Under the beneficiary‑led construction component, 1.42 lakh houses received clearance, providing up to INR 2.5 lakh per family to construct a pucca house on their own land. The partnership‑based affordable housing component saw 67,045 houses approved, where public and private agencies collaborate with state governments to develop projects, and the centre offers financial support to eligible families.
With these latest clearances, the total sanctioned houses under PMAY‑U 2.0 have risen above 18.38 lakh. The portfolio now includes 14.40 lakh beneficiary‑led homes, 2.48 lakh partnership‑based affordable units, 1.36 lakh houses allocated under the interest‑subsidy scheme, and 13,046 homes approved as affordable rental housing.
A comprehensive review by the ministry’s secretary examined implementation speed, timely start and completion of construction, geo‑tagging, fund utilisation, beneficiary verification, and overall progress of both PMAY‑U and PMAY‑U 2.0. He emphasized the need for faster rollout, prompt fund release, rigorous monitoring, and stronger coordination among all stakeholders to ensure that every eligible urban family benefits.
Beyond delivering physical houses, PMAY‑U 2.0 aims to promote social inclusion, improve living standards, and provide economic security to millions of urban families. Notably, more than 1 crore of the approved houses have been allocated to women, either as sole owners or joint owners, reflecting the Prime Minister’s commitment to women’s empowerment. This focus on female ownership enhances financial security, social empowerment, and women’s participation in family decisions, turning a house into a valuable asset that strengthens families and boosts dignity and safety.
