Passenger traffic climbs to 67.27 crore, suburban travel spikes

Indian Railways transported 67.27 crore passengers in August 2026, a rise from 64.43 crore the previous year. Suburban travel showed the sharpest increase, expanding 9.02 percent to reach 38.01 crore journeys, up from 34.89 crore in August 2025. The growth underscores continued public reliance on rail for daily commutes and long‑distance travel.

During the month, the railways introduced 14 additional Amrit Bharat services, raising the total number of such trains to 86. New routes linking major hubs—such as Subedarganj‑Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Gorakhpur‑Bandra Terminus, Gorakhpur‑Delhi Junction, Ahmedabad‑Bhagalpur, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus‑Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Junction‑Udna Junction, and Dhanbad‑Koyambathur—were added to improve connectivity and reduce travel times.
